Liked almost everything. Just dislike Dominoes and Oceanic Feeling. The latter drags on for way too long

After all the negative reviews, I expected something bad but I was surprised that I actually enjoyed it for most part. I don't think Ella is even capable of making bad music. I think she fell victim to high expectations due to her first  two albums being acclaimed masterpieces + the long hiatuses between each record. People were never going to settle for anything other than amazing.

LastNight

I had the album playing in the background on Friday and I wasn’t really taken with it, but I finally took some proper time to listen in full today and wowwww.

I sat in the park for 3 hours with it on repeat and it was such a beautiful moment listening in the sunshine with the breeze blowing; it’s a really gorgeous collection of songs.

To me it’s more like an experience than an album. You have to make the effort to take some time out and set the scene in order to drink the whole thing in properly, and I really appreciate that. In a world that’s so busy and where so much of what we watch and listen to is digestible background noise, it’s really nice to have an album that forces you to spend some quality time with it.

I love all of the songs, but my current favourites are The Path, SATNS, Secrets, Dominoes, Mood Ring and Oceanic Feeling - which is such a beautiful closer to the album, I adore it. Lorde is so talented and so incredibly smart; she somehow manages to articulate feelings I didn’t know I felt. It always feels cliche and kind of rude to say that she’s intelligent beyond her years, but it really does feels like she has the soul of a thousand year old sage who’s come to earth to share her wisdom with us.

I can’t stop listening to it. I guess it will be on repeat until Friday when Halsey and OneRepublic drops their albums… I love the vibe of the album more and more. And those GMA performances :fatcat:. I guess I’m straight for her. I really love see her smile and be happy. I’m emotional.

After Melodrama, I hoped she was going to develop even further and keep getting better and better but this was a slight step back for me. Still passable but not taking it up a gear. A lot of songs blending into each other, very similar vibe throughout. As good as that little interlude was, it would've been cool in a full-length track, the bonus tracks should totally have been on the standard and it's a let down how the album starts out strong and then tapers off drastically after the first half. Oceanic Feeling definitely outstayed its welcome and some of the lyrics didn't really come off that well, especially in The Man With The Axe. I'm just glad the whole thing didn't sound like a copy of COTCC because after the first two singles sounding like songs from Lana's most recent works, it was beginning to sound like she was releasing an album of discarded tracks. I hope this is just her experimenting with a new sound through unplugging and she'll do something down a new route next time. But that album cover art will be awesome forever.

Guys I had no idea they were doing these music boxes for Solar Power. It does not include a CD but it has several pictures of it and a code to redeem the album online. I'm actually gonna get one even though I don't love the album that much but I feel like it's gonna grow on me eventually.

Ok tbh i talked mad sh*t on this album at the beginning of this week.

But here I am realizing one by one I have added most of the tracks to my playlist :laughga: I think I love this album. It took a few listens to the path, dominoes, and mood ring and now I've found appreciation for over half of the album and I imagine even the ones I'm still not feeling (California, man w the axe, oceanic feeling) are likely going to grow on me too.

Honestly, this album is a mad grower. I mostly enjoyed it after first listen but thought it had several skips - now I've literally had it on repeat for days and found myself humming to the songs that I first found meh. It's shaping up to be my favorite album of the year.

I also think some people needed to overcome the initial "shock" before starting enjoying it. Also, when you closely listen to it, you realize it's not that much of a "happy" record like so many are making it out to be. She's very anxious about her life decisions in many songs, plus addresses our not-so-bright future with climate change and the mental health epidemic. Not to mention Big Star, that is downright devastating - like, I can't with people saying the album conveys no emotion. Yes, it's a sun-soaked stoner beach escapade, but it's not just that.
