I still can't believe he spent 20k dollars in 2 months. That's almost like my 2 years salary.

I mean, haven't you ever feel bad or feeling like you'll give your friend so much trouble if you were asking them for money even if they are known to be kind and generous? It is just courtesy. 
 

Your best friend is not your parents. You can't just assume you'll get perks just because you close with them.

In the comments they said he probably also had insurance and got money from that too so.. i don't wanna sound harsh but i don't think asking people for money to go "on a spiritual journey" is the right thing to do. It's probably better if he goes to therapy. I don't think that would cost 40.000 dollars and it would certainly be more beneficial to him

Not homeless. He chose to give up his house and job and travel around in a camper van for 6 months. But didn't have the money/budgeting skills to sustain that life so is now asking for money to fund his journey. 

Big difference.

Therapy is  good but not always the answer. If he thinks he needed to go out and experience the world for healing, to feel whole again, etc, who are we to judge, really? Everyone have their own struggles and ideas how they should deal with them 

These days, giving strangers some donations is common and popular anyway. For any reasons.
For example, there was someone on YT who asks for donation so they upgrade their gaming setup. And those who follow them are happy to do so cos they feel that user l's videos gave them joy and such. People who wanna help, can do so. Maybe this time you get help from strangers, but next time you can always pay it forward and donated to another strangers who needed it. I feel like this is less selfish too tbh.

Also.. Bad things happen to people all the time but they still have to return to work once their physical injuries have healed. 6 months off is quite the luxury. Absolutely his choice of course. But dogwalking isn't the only type of work he can look for.
