I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, I was just surprised people were celebrating it. I think more diversity is a good thing. Having another race be the majority would be an important change for the U.S. I’m just used to being socially subjugated for being trans and having people wish my population numbers were less. And that has full, pure hatred behind it. So when people celebrate this, it clicks in my head the same way. The same vitriol is present. I just feel like I can’t be anything, and I will be hated for everything I am but did not choose to be.

White people have been an established majority here for hundreds of years and direct oppressors for about as long.

As our demographics change and the "playing field" starts to even out (both as the general ethnicity of the US changes and as positions of authority are filled with both POC and white people), you'll see the scars of that oppression diminish and heal.

That's why this is something to celebrate

My point is the number of ppl doesnt necessairily mean anything if there is a power system imbalance

 

I think numbers could make a big difference in the US but it would have to be much bigger number changes than this

Here in Brazil the white population has been decreasing and black population increasing as well. Not because there are no white people born, but because more and more people are proud to self-identify as black and no longer as white. It is a really good change of cultural behavior

Well it does sound better to celebrate growth in minorities than to insinuate disapearance of white ppl. Like ppl are individuals, dont be shaming ones existance either

 

Like i get especially why in ur case when ur already on the defensive of ur existance and ur brain is wired that way u might make that immediate connection

 

Ppl arent always mindful of how they yazz or word things online unfortunately but i dont think anyone meant anything bad just that diversity is on the rise

Oh boy, kinda off topic but this common misconception is very harmful to people of color, in a literal and physical sense. People think that because darker skin does not get sunburnt that means it is okay to go out to the beach without sunscreen. But unfortunately ultraviolet rays still penetrate the skin and do damage, and it's more dangerous because there's no sunburn to warn. As a result skin disease disproportionately affects people of color.

I agree it helps tho. As i said to the user above tho, its not what ultimately ends disparities tho. Social values, ethics and awareness id say are even more important than whether white ppl make up 60% of population or 40%

Whatever race makes up the majority would then be more likely to be oppressive, but majority minorities means that no race makes it across the 50% threshold, so the "majority" is actually multiple minorities. African countries prove that out, eastern countries prove that out, I'm not saying white people are monolithic, just that their majority is oppressive in the US
