It's not a solution to pedophilia as a problem, it's just going to lead to Apple gathering even more of your private data for itself. If it actually combatted child abuse than I'd be down for it but as @Reginald said, pedos gonna pedo even if their phone is being snooped through. They'll find a way around it and it'll simply be a privacy invasion issue.

If it can help ongoing investigations or find missing children in those images, I think it’s worth it. Possibly saving a child’s life is more important to me.

I mean, this only reveals that the company already has the ability of artificial intelligence to identify by text and code what a photograph or video contains. No human will be looking for it manually because that would be impossible. Technology already exists to identify minors, nudity, what people say, exactly when, where, etc. This is just a step to tell us very carefully: yes, we already have full access to your content, but although we don't want to reveal this to you, now just let us help society become a safer place. I believe in Apple, but conversations about privacy seem to have been buried in the last century for these big companies. The problem is that they are so very secretive, and they move so much faster than laws on privacy rights...

Apple refused to unlock iPhones to cooperate on investigating terrorism but now is using a for the children approach as a reason to do this. This is a way to introduce the technology publicly - but I guarantee the real reason they will be developing this is for use of copyrighted images and files. Apple was notorious for its DRM on purchased files. So if they have this technology whats to stop them from using it to prevent certain images, audio and video from playing on your phone unless you have an Apple authorized license perhaps? There will be some sort of catch to this for the everyday user down the line - that's for sure.

Given some of the responses here, no wonder companies launch new privacy sensitive tech "to protect the children." many people will say it's worthwhile and a worthy sacrifice. It's crazy. That said, from what I've read, there shouldn't be false positive flags with such tech. But can you imagine authoritarian countries forcing Apple to flag other kinds of images that go against their regime? It's such a slippery slope.

Gurl this is just a reason so they can snoop through your phone, get all the info they need on you, sell it to other companies. They’re just using the “protecting children” excuse. Why would a company go through such extensive effort financially for any good cause when it could be doing it for more money. This is stupid. Also doubt we have such recognition technology, what criteria is child abuse exactly? You gonna detect age from pixels? Sis could be some adult twinks having bondage role play

Any OS will do the same, it's just that Apple always announces it. Who knows what android do, or have done, to your phone, since their OS is also more open for modification than iOS.
