Two Georgian silver medallists were told to leave the Olympic Games for taking a sightseeing trip in Tokyo.

Leaving the athletes' village for non-Games purposes is against measures designed to protect against Covid-19.

A Georgian official said thatVazha Margvelashvili, 27 and Lasha Shavdatuashvili, 29, had left the compound to meet "one of their good acquaintances" who lives in Japan.
"No-one stopped them at the exit, so they thought that they could go outside. They wanted just to have a bit of open air, to relax after a tough day of competition, after a tough lockdown period."

They must have already know the rules but did it anyway :diane:

I mean, Tom Daley even said that they  can't go out in his room tour on Olympic athletes village in Tokyo so this rules is clearly announced to everyone involved

Miscommunication and mismanagement from the part of the Olympics.

In this case, this was too extreme because clearly no one told them they couldn't leave.

I can't imagine spending weeks in Japan and not getting to see any of Japan. Obviously I understand and support why they're keeping everyone locked down, it's just really weird to think about.

I feel like they are the kind that would test the rules before actually following them. I'm sure the athletes were informed but they decided to break the rules anyway.

They could wait until the end to visit whatever it is they wanted to see. They were just bored and put that before their lifelong goal. Kinda like people breaking lockdown rules last year to attend secret gatherings.

This.  It seems fair they should be able to take some days after the Olympics are over.

Ooh they can still travel afterward? I was under the impression Japan wasn't allowing foreign tourists at all right now.

Japan's border is mostly closed with over 150 countries on its prohibited list:

Idk.  But I thought it would be nice if they could stay a little longer to at least see Tokyo.
