In 95% of cases, people accepted care from the B-HEARD team, data from the city shows. That's compared with 82% for traditional 911 response teams, which include police. Additionally, 50% of people treated by B-HEARD were transported to the hospital for more care, a far lower number than the 82% who are transported to the hospital with traditional 911 response. The city said that 911 operators routed 138 mental health emergency calls — 25% of the number of calls during the pilot period — to B-HEARD and expect that number to grow to 50% in the coming months. People hear "defund the police" and think "less police, more crime, I'm less safe" and have an immediate negative reaction. You can argue against it with logic but it's hard to overcome an emotional response. Defunding the police and reallocating resources is a great idea, but for it to be implemented nationally it will have to win over the majority of people. We spend too much time calling people trash and not enough trying to find ways to convince them. This is because they're simple and could mean anything but are pretty clear what they mean. Example, "Make America Great Again". How to MAGA? Who knows. The end result is clear. "Defund the Police" is a bad slogan even if the measures it advocates work. Sure it's simple but it's not really what it stands for.
