Mitchey 894
65-70% is fantastic. Then you add on how well Gaga’s performance is being received, I feel great about it. For ASIB to be Gaga’s first leading role and also sit at 90% and certified fresh on RT is QUITE a feat and I think it gave you guys some unrealistic standards. I am a huge fan of cinema and many of my favorite movies are scored between 65-75% on RT. Super excited for this movie

Hyperobject 66,771
i wonder what movie industry would look like if every big actor and actress had crazy stans like pop girls have. just imagine a meltdown every time DiCaprio lost his oscar or when Jennifer Lawrence's film flopped. people would say: he/she/they in his/her/their Dark Phoenix's era. LilyLark 10,106
Some of y'all are way too negative and/or set your expectations way too high. Just because a film isn't like...in the 80s-90s on RT & just because people aren't saying Gag is a frontrunner to win the Oscar doesn't mean it's a flop. Right now there are a lot of very good things.... 1) Even the 'bad' reviews are praising Gaga. I'd argue 92-95% of the reviews are praising her, which is excellent (no one gets 100%, not even Meryl). Richard Brody is one of the most respected critics & is VERY harsh normally...even when he 'praises' an actor there's always some criticism (I've seen some people focusing on the fact that he does criticize her accent, so I'm trying to provide context). Think of Brody like 2012 era Pitchfork lol...Anyway, the man basically said Gaga is on the level of Frances f*cking McDormand, who is an acting legend. That's a really big deal! Justin Chang, another very respected critic, loved the movie & loved Gaga. These are the types of critics directors read and pay attention to...this will help Gaga (Chang has been namechecked by directors before). 2) The box office tracking is good. The record for an R rated film over Thanksgiving weekend is 30 mil (pre COVID). This is tracking for a 20+ mil opening...if it does that in a time when a lot of films that aren't comic book films, remakes, kids movies, etc. are flopping..that would be a big deal. Although, ngl, little worried most of the monsters went to the preview screenings and won't go see the movie now that it's open when their ticket can contribute to the box office. 3) They have to still load a lot of reviews, but it looks like HOG will stay fresh. Rami Malek won an Oscar for a film that was at 60% on RT. Meryl won for a film that was rotten on RT. Andra Day was nominated for a film that was rotten on RT. At this point, if it does well at the box office (this isn't an arthouse film, so the box office will help) and stays fresh Gaga probably has a 90% chance of being nominated. All I’m saying is don’t expect a nomination because you might be disappointed come early next year if they don’t call her name out. She 100% still has a chance but her road to a nomination just got a lot harder compared to ASIB. And yes you’re right about Malek beating Cooper in 2019 but let’s not forget that Malek was playing an iconic musician whose well-known, loved and admired which most likely sentimentally swayed voters. Gaga doesn’t have that advantage as the audience aren’t meant to root for Reggiani as they do with say Freddie Mercury. I agree with you that Colman, McDormand and I think Penelope Cruz have the advantage of having good scripts. I don't think Alana Haim from Licorice Pizza is that much of a threat. That movie is more of a showcase for the director (Paul Thomas Anderson) than the actors. You are right about Malek playing an iconic character, but I was kinda underscoring how the commercial traction of a movie can actually increase the chances of an actor winning the Oscar. House of Gucci has that kind of traction. Joker and Bohemian Rhapsody, for example, definitely benefited from them being huge blockbusters. It depends on how huge House of Gucci gets, but it is absolutely possible for House of Gucci to be the highest grossing movie in the Best Actress category. Of course this doesn't mean Gaga will win, but it does mean something.
nodandsmile 10,730
some of yall don't really follow movie releases like that when Gaga isn't involved, right? 'cause if you really think mixed reviews to a movie can stop somebody's chances at awards season or end their career... LMFAO

That said, I still think Gaga has a very good shot at a nomination IF the film does well at the box office (let's hope some little monsters go see it over the weekend..I'm a little worried everyone saw the screenings which don't count towards the box office total lol). HOG isn't an arthouse or indie film–it's a commercial film. And when it comes to commercial films, box office can absolutely help with the Oscars. If it does more than 20 million that would help the film a lot...esp. as so many films that aren't comic book movies/remakes/etc. are flopping. There's usually one actor or actress who partially gets in on the commercial strength of the film. Also, a lot of people said SAG ate up Jared & Gag's performances. Even critics who disliked the movie were noting this...and SAG loving Jared & Gaga is a very good sign. And I don't think Alana will end up being competition...there's some problematic aspects with Licorice Pizza that could very well be a thing. And Variety/Vanity Fair/etc. having Gaga on their list absolutely helps with her 'buzz.' The big hurdle is Frances. If only she had run in best supporting actress, I would argue Gag is a complete lock for a nomination.

nodandsmile 10,730
and it's VERY early to talk about its fate... there's gonna hundreds of reviews on this one nothing is set in stone, scores can go dramatically up or down in the next few days!!!
