ConnorFilm 7,091
I have followed Matt with Next Best Picture since 2017. I asked him about the embargo. Same with someone who saw it the other night and writes for the Observer. I’ll see if they can confirm the 22 embargo date, too. freebit 6,127
Now that guy is big mad he got ratted out. He only has himself to blame tbh. If he had exerted some self-control and not been messy, he wouldn't be in this situation. Also, another stan has done the research and found out the root of his weird hatred for HoG is that fact that he appears to stan the TLD and wants it to get nominations instead of HoG, which he sees as its competition (even though they're wildly different movies by different studios). Pundits are truely weird group tbh, and I kind of hope the Oscars crash like the Grammys making them redundent, because without people carring about awards, no one will care about what they do. Aside from a few, toxicity seems to thrive there, especially with that one specific group (World of reel guy, Hollywood Elsewhere, Stone etc.) Movie could be questionable, or it could be not, but either way, if I'm in charge of HoG's promotion and this type of mess is happening with critics and pundits, it probably is better to have an embargo. Tangerine 270
Everything with this movie has been so messy! But some ppl are saying MGM has been late lifting embargo for some other films lately Brazilian critic Dalenogare just said on his live at his channel that MGM will use the same type of embargo for Licorice Pizza as well, so it is not about the quality of HOG, it’s the studio policy. anyway o think it will be opposite of Spencer, actual people with enjoy and critics won’t
androiduser 7,438
fans here are UNBELIEVABLE... the moment they start SUSPECTING that the reviews won't be good, they start with the conspiracy theories and all of a sudden reviews and Oscars don't matter any more.... I think so. All previous MGM releases this year, No Time to Die, Candyman, and Respect all followed the same trajectory.
moonsago 6,579
Reading this thread is an emotional trip, one second I feel hopeful then not, however, from what I am seeing, and trying very hard to make out, is that for the most part the reception is good with just a few people ( some possible fake ) not liking it. I don’t know what to say, I don’t usually care about critics when it comes to movies or music, but when it comes to Gaga’s career I seem to really want her to win. I think it’s going to be a box office hit at least, the names are huge, her name alone will pull a lot of people in especially after ASIB and even if she manages to get just a nomination for best actress and not a win, I think it’s still great. It’s literally her second movie guys, what kind of history are ya’ll trying to have her make? Lol

I mean, I don't think critics have agendas and I don't believe in conspiracy theories. But it is valid to point out that WOR has been wrong a lot & that small group of critics (like 3 people) that fans are freaking out about associate with Jeff Wells and do/say questionable ****, so taking their word as gospel-before even the embargo lifts-is silly. I'm fairly sure those critics don't even count towards Rotten Tomatoes or Meta Critic. It's especially silly as those few people have engaged in clickbait before. WOR isn't the same as a critic for Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Vanity Fair, etc. It's also valid to point out letterbox has a LOT of trolls (Spencer has been trolled, as was Captain Marvel, etc.). The film could suck, the film could be great, the film could be polarizing. Fans need to chill though and stop taking unsubstantiated rumors as fact and/or being so aggressive in people's mentions asking for details. And while reviews do matter, it shouldn't keep someone from deciding to enjoy the film. Hell some cult classic and camp classics were initially panned or had mixed reviews. Yeah the 22nd isn't a good sign if it's true (I believe a few critics have said the 9th, though). I wouldn't be worried if it lifted on the 18th or 19th, as that would be about a week ahead of time and fairly normal, but 3 days? That said, MGM has been lifting their embargoes very late and it could be worse (if it was lifted on the 24th, that would be a death sign) and they are trotting the cast out to do a lot of promo & even doing a big London premiere (I'm assuming if they are doing London, they will have an LA or NYC one too)...which is odd behavior IF they believe they have a total stinker on their hands. That said the fans need to stop being insane on social media...they are going to make film twitter turn on her like they did with Jared Leto or Rami Malek. Lifting an embargo a few days before a film's release is NEVER a good sign, but as some users have pointed out, MGM has been constantly lifting embargoes late for their films (Bond, Licorice Pizza, Candyman). It's really a toss up in terms of deciphering what the reaction could be. I guess we just need to wait until Tuesday and see what the social reactions are like. Ivy 11,740
10 hours ago, G U C C I said: Critics at this point are using the movie and Gaga’s name as bait for clicks and interactions. It’s an easy thing to do when she has such a hugely active fan base. Little monsters will put people on pedestals or literally tear someone apart in social media just in how they use Gaga’s name. Hell some of them even do it to Gaga herself when she doesn’t meet their standards. Until the embargo is lifted I wouldn’t worry about any actual reviews of performances. Having said that though a fan did go to the screening at the academy museum and answered a bunch of questions on Twitter from people. WARNING SPOILERS - Partizias brain tumor and Maurizio not seeing her in the hospital are completely not in the movie. Which for me, as someone who has read the book and watched countless documentaries, seems like something that should have been included. I know the hospital advised him to not come but it is something she has repeatedly said was a defining moment in her hatred for him becoming what it was. Also she is not actually arrested in the film. You just see her going from the cops searching her apartment to court which seems like a big misstep for me personally because one of the things that was repeated the most by all of the people interviewed at the time was her insisting on wearing a fur coat and jewels to the police station. I would think that alone would play heavily into what a narcissistic person she is. I’m not doubting the story or their interpretation of it but even only having one daughter instead of two just makes it seem like they played hard and fast with all the facts. It’s obviously fictional and only inspired by true events but I would think that given the interest in the family and what happened some things being so far outside of reality may not help with some critical reviews. Im surprised they didn't include that stuff actually!
Shav33l 1,241
Guys, stop worrying so much about the embargo lifting close to the release date, it's just a studio policy for MGM. They've done the same for their other releases and will do it for many others in the future. I'm sure everything's gonna be fine. Red wine, cheap perfume and a filthy pout. Levine 22,856
So after being better than Bobby Campbell, Sarah Tanno, Frederic, Interscope, Lady Gaga herself, little monsters are now better than MGM?
