This is slightly off-topic, but does anyone know why review embargoes exist? Is it so that everyone can review the movie objectively without getting influenced by other people's thoughts and feelings?

Cause I can imagine if everyone posts their reviews at different times that they're gonna read each other's work before even writing their own. They might try to be clever by refuting other people's arguments, etc.

That's how I see it.

So that all the reviews come out at the same time. And it is not like one individual/site getting all the attention, and prevents a race between the reviewers like who can publish the first review.

It exists for movies, games, most things basically. It kind of ensures that initial negative reception doesn't hamper the sales of the product be it a game or a movie.

Movies lifting an embargo early usually means that the production houses are confident about the movie. But sometimes they backfire as well. So there is no sure shot guarantee to it. :vegas:

Because:

You can create a massive conversation, when everyone releases review at the same period of time, more people would join and discuss the film, which is one kind of promo.

You can control the timing of it so you can fill your promotion schedule, so that it's not too much or too little and too far between.

Mediocre/bad films do this by control the timing as close as the release so that it wouldn't effect the box office that much.

Great films do this by giving it a long window between release so that the word of mouth gets stronger, and build up the hype around them.

The review bombing was predictable but still concerning if we also care about word of mouth and mass appeal. Some people will go looking at other user reviews on letterboxd and rotten…but the former has no way of verifying if the viewer actually saw the film.

my other concern is how much praise Jared Leto is getting. Don’t get me wrong all praise for the film will enhance it’s profile but sometimes with divisive movies critics will latch onto one good thing and hammer it as better than the rest of the movie and so far the mixed reviews (that aren’t unverified trolls) have mentionned him and not Gaga :saladga:

I've seen some "reviews" saying they liked The Last Duo more. Yeah, they're really going to compare two very different movies, only because they're from the same director.

Wasn't that kinda expected though? Leto is an experienced actor, Oscar winner. And his character gives him all the freedom to show his talent. Since I saw the first trailer, I knew people would talk more about him than Gaga.

yes partially but he looked like such a caricature in the trailers I didn’t think the character would be taken seriously beyond comedy relief but apparently it’s a juicy role too so

hoping both get nominated :huntyga:

i don't think is because of that, adam driver is also an incredible actor, and so it is gaga, i think that he's been the subject of attention because i think he's sort of the comedic relieve of the movie and that type of role always gets attention from the public first right in the moment, gaga on the other hand, as she said she had her mind in create a real woman and no this idealized fun role of a gold digger murderer

“I was living a perfect happy healthy life until i decided to watch this (HORRIBLE) movie. As soon as i finished watching it, i passed out and an ambulance came to my house and drove me to the nearest hospital. When i woke up, the doctor told me that i was diagnosed with stage 4 terminal brain and skin cancer. They chopped off my legs and arms but it was already too late. I was given 2 months to live which i will be spending laying in my bed, constantly in pain, struggling with severe depression and PTSD while waiting for my final breath. Thank you Lady Gaga.“

“Terrible acting from Gaga..very disappointing..don’t waste ur time and money people”

and the one posted earlier. These are so borderline that it’s obvious they’re trolls but as time will go the review bombing will get more subtle 😖

Review bombing? There’s been very few real people who have commented on it as per the embargo. Every verified person has loved the movie. I actually went through all the “reviews” and not one review from a real person was negative. The only real negativity comes from the litterbox ones. And a verified person said it was one of the best of the year.

I honestly don't know why he is getting that much praise. I mean anyone can look unrecognizable with that much prosthetics and make up, so what's the big deal :yennefer: Don't get me wrong he can definitely act but everywhere I see about him it's about "jared leto looks UNRECONIGZABLE in new movie!" or stuff like that :/

But fear not guys. Even if Gaga didn't deliver an outstanding performance, critics will say good things about her. Remember she won a Critics Choice awards.

It’s over a decade now and Madge fans still chase every single move of Gaga. It’s totally understandable though since their fav has nothing to offer :partysick:

Dreams of you and me are in the dirt.
