“Traditional TV viewing for the Summer Games has declined noticeably, and, a decision by popular gymnast Simone Biles to take herself out of the team competition early Tuesday has spurred advertiser anxiety…

Viewership for Friday night’s opening ceremonies came to around 17 million viewers, according to Nielsen , marking a decline of approximately 36% from the audience for the company’s 2016 broadcast of an opening ceremony for the Summer Games in Rio. Viewership has improved for each primetime broadcast following, but the size of the declines from the previous Rio Olympics have unnerved advertisers, who are believed to have invested more than $1.2 billion in the sports extravaganza.“

The IOC take their exclusivity deals seriously, and always have :gum:

These Olympics have been a huge flop when it comes to broadcasting. I watched my sport and haven't watched a single event since.

I remember when I was a kid in the late 90s the Olympics were EVERYWHERE and all anyone talked about for the weeks it ran... and as I've gotten older each new games feels like less and less people are interested in it. And now with so many people cutting their cable, there are less people casually watching the games either. :bear:

and clearly they’re stuck in the 90s bc this isn’t the thing to ban when a lot of young people love Twitch and their streamers.

People in general are showing much less interest in it and paying much less attention. Probably because we are going through a lot of personal struggles due to the pandemic.

I think it's pretty obvious people are dealing with more important stuff right now to be watching TV. It's not just the Oscars, the Grammys, Superbowl, etc. People are in the middle of a pandemic.

Yes but they don't win any money. A possible solution would be Twitch/Amazon buying the rights to the Olympics and allowing their users to broadcast it, but that's too good to be true :poot:

I would maybe watch a bit of the Olympics if there would be a YouTube livestream and replay or something like that but I'm not gonna turn on my tv at 5am Europe time to watch random sport competitions

Eurovision is available on Youtube so why not the Olympics?

It’s so hard to watch the Olympics on NBC, barely any sport is actually played. It’s all ads and useless commentary, not the actual game played.

I don’t understand why I PAY for Peacock yet can’t watch it live through there when it’s legit supposed to be NBC’s streaming hub!!!
