Tokyo Olympics hit by hot and humid weather

The Tokyo Olympics organizers, already struggling to contain the spread of Covid-19, are contending with another obstacle largely beyond their control: a heat wave.

Intense heat and humidity could force competition schedule changes at the Tokyo Olympics and the International Olympic Committee said on Sunday it would back any such plans if needed.

While Games organisers have moved the marathon and race-walk events to the cooler northern city of Sapporo, most events are taking place in Tokyo between July 23 and Aug. 8, the peak of the city's hot and humid summer.

Athletes across several sports have complained that competing in midday heat, where temperatures regularly hit or exceed 33 degrees Celsius (91.4°F), has hampered their performances.

One of Japan's most popular weather apps, offered caution over the risk of heatstroke.
Emergency medicine experts had warned first responders at the Tokyo Olympics could easily confuse heatstroke and coronavirus patients because the illnesses bear similar symptoms as both illnesses have symptoms of high temperature, dehydration and fatigue.
