I saw this topic on ATRL, and though I don’t usually care for their Gaga content, this was a topic that actually sparked my interest.

I want to see legitimate stan opinions on this topic because I think these are inarguably her signature songs (potentially Shallow too). Both had such an impact on the sound of their time, but not as much so in the years that followed afterward.

There is NOTHING wrong with sounding dated (especially not for Gaga who was trailblazing a popular sound, not chasing one). It’s just the simple fact that some music sounds of it’s time, and that is 100% okay.

For comparison, Madonna’s Like a Virgin sounds incredibly dated to me, but Vogue doesn’t. Both are great songs, but just one aged through the decades slightly better.

In my opinion, Poker Face (a legendary classic song) sounds dated in the year 2021. It’s production and singing style are very late 2000s/early 2010s, and neither have transcended those periods of time. Bad Romance on the other hand sounds completely timeless to me. It’s almost too weird to sound like something of it’s time.

Let me know what you guys think!

Poker Face sounds of its time but not ... old or stale, if that makes sense :neyde:

I don't think Bad Romance sounds dated at all. There's still really nothing like it out there (well, other than Judas :ladyhaha:). Poker Face is more dated to me in terms of its production.

For more examples of this kind of thing, take Dua.

I think most of her self-titled era songs are gonna sound dated in a couple years. They’re still bops, some are still staples of the late 2010s, but none of them have that timeless feel. FN on the other hand sounds like it’s gonna age perfectly through the years.

Poker Face yeah to a certain extent, but Bad Romance is timeless.

I agree with this completely. A song of it’s era that has aged horribly to me personally would be Boom Boom Pow.

You can tell what era they are from but I don't think they sound dated. There are other songs that sound dated like Disco Heaven.

The studio version of Poker Face does sound a bit 'dated' by now, but the live versions still sound as fresh as always!

Bad Romance fails to age tbh.

This is a really interesting discussion. Here's my thoughts...

I believe Poker Face does sound dated but Bad Romance doesn't. The reason that is is because Poker Face was the first truly weird Gaga song the world heard and as she was the new 'it girl' everyone wanted a piece of that so tonnes of artists tried to create a sound that was similar. Basically Gaga helped CREATE the late 00s early 10s dance sound following the release of The Fame.

However, when it came round to Bad Romance, other artists realised it was a sound that couldn't really be copied or developed. It was a weird sound of it's own therefore no one else really tried to replicate it.

Therefore, the reason one sounds more dated than the other...Poker Face was a victim of it's own success whereas BR kind of stands on its own as it's not really reminiscent of a specific 'time'.

That's my thoughts anyway

Can you please explain, how you define “dated”? I always wonder what people really mean by it and if (most likely) people have different opinions on what dated means to them 😅

Bad Romance is that type of song that age like very fine wine. Timeless, iconic, career defining :firega:

It's her Thriller / Vogue to be honest

Poker Face is still doing very very fine in 2021
