Pro-European parties gained a convincing victory in the elections in Moldova on Sunday after 99.60 per cent of the ballots cast were counted.

According to these results, the pro-European Action and Solidarity Party, PAS, led until recently by President Maia Sandu, came first by a landslide, taking 52.60 per cent of the votes and 63 seats of the 101 seats, a comfortable majority.

The pro-Russian Bloc of Communists and Socialists, BeCS, came far behind on 27.32 per cent of the votes, with 32 seats, and the Ilan Shor Party won 5.77 per cent and six seats.

Since Moldova, a nation of 3.5m people wedged between Ukraine and Romania, won independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, its politics have been shaped by battles over its geopolitical orientation, pitting groups in favour of stronger EU ties against those who want closer links with Moscow.

President Maia Sandu weclomed the result and said she was eager to “work with an honest and competent government to unite society and put the interests of citizens at the heart of government efforts”.
