RAMROD 116,994
A 90-year-old woman in Belgium was infected with two different variants of the Covid-19 virus at the same time, researchers have found, in what is one of the first documented cases of its kind. The unvaccinated woman was admitted to hospital in the Belgian city of Aalst on 3 March of this year following a number of falls and was confirmed as being Covid positive on the same day. Despite showing no initial signs of respiratory distress, she soon deteriorated and died five days after her admission. When the patient’s respiratory sample was processed for genomic sequencing, researchers discovered that she had been infected by the Alpha and Beta variants, which first emerged in the UK and South Africa respectively. VasilisVas 5,213
That’s horrible, but she was 90. I wonder if she had other health issues at her age and If being vaccinated would’ve made any difference.
bionic 50,111
Was her death actually directly related to the COVID diagnoses? Sounds like she fell down and died following that (as lots of elderly people do), and caught COVID somewhere along the way Article is behind paywall

We didn't previously know that you can effectively have two cases of covid in your body at the same time.

Sounds like she was initially admitted for a series of falls and she started getting serious COVID symptoms not long after which caused her death. More detail would definitely be preferred to clear the situation, but if she had 2 strains attacking her body I couldnt imagine how bad it could have been. I had a grandfather who passed away after a fall just over a year ago. Spent several days in the hospital before randomly going critical and passing. Economy 52,835
Are the variants different enough that it even played a big role tho? A single strain has a not so low chance of killing and unvaxxed 90 year old Cuz if the 2 variants are simmilar enough the same antibodies might work the exact same way and cells attack the same unmutated part of the virus... if thats the case from an immunity perspective its still like having 1 single viral infection and the differences in both variants dont actually matter it might make a good story but it doesnt mean having 2 varisnts at the same time was actually the reason she died.
