Is ARTPOP Art-Pop?

Gaga always described ARTPOP as the bridge between art and pop, constantly referencing Andy Warhol, Ambrovic, Koons, etc. She used terms like the infamous Reverse Warholian Expedition and talked about the concept of an app that explored the relationship between art, fashion, technology and Gaga as a cultural interface. Many dismissed the album as pretentious garbage and Gaga as full of sh1t because in 2013 just like today this level of artistic expression was rare and pop stars were viewed as pop stars not true artists. Now Art-Pop the genre is relatively new and is defined as pop combining high and low culture. notable modern artists involved in the genre are mostly lesser well known electronic musicians fka twigs,Arca,Bjork,Fiona Apple,M.I.A etc who's music is very different than ARTPOP besides the electronic production. Their music is experimental ,intelligent , serious , introspective, and generally critically acclaimed. ARTPOP is an amazing album and one of the most interesting albums ever made in my opinion, and I think it is Art-Pop the only main difference is ARTPOP is way more exaggerated and campy which I think is just Gaga's flare. so basically this is a dissection of wether ARTPOP the album is actually Art-Pop the genre in short it is.:trollga:

I love ARTPOP but it's EDM. Of course it has Gaga's campiness and unusual point of view, but it's that. A pop EDM album. If it was called anything else other than ARTPOP it would get literally a quarter of the criticism it got.

It doesn't intend to be that genre, so no. It's just familiar naming.

its just named ARTPOP because it's a reverse of Warhol's pop-art, and not after the genre so no

but i would love gags if she ever goes down that route!!

Gaga's "ARTPOP" was a social movement, or at least an idea of such a movement of passion, that interacts with art pop (in the 1960s sense) but also through sexuality, dance and technology.

Well if you’ve heard actual art pop it’s pretty clear that ARTPOP isn’t actually art pop. Maybe the closest thing to it would be the title track. But yeah, I don’t even think she was intending it to be art pop

i think the title track comes close to the actual art pop genre, ive always thought it’s one of the best songs she’s ever done lyrically/sonically

With all the outside songwriters, producers, and random unnecessary collabs on that album, there is simply no focus on the album from one track to the next. It might as well be called a compilation.
The original concept was cool, and Applause is a good traditional Gaga tune but that’s about it. :fan:

I think the album was meant to be but I don't know how much control Gaga had during production.

I think she originally intended for the album to span different genres but the whole thing got produced by an EDM producer so her ideas were all diluted.

Manicure was a rock song with a hip hop beat. The original Venus demo is super subdued. I Wanna Be With You was really personal and we got a shouted song about drugs instead.

I honestly think this album was missed potential and Gaga and her label had very differing ideas of what the album should have been.

Of course it is art-pop, sure it doesn't sound anything like bjork, arca, FKA twigs etc, but that doesn't mean anything, it is ARTPOP in another way.
I mean, Gaga bought an instrumental from a artsy experimental EDM and trance band, i don't think anyone here would say that Infected Mushroom for example is not pure state of art, what they do has nothing to do with pop, then gaga wrote her own song on top of their instrumental with incredible witty and deep lyrics adressing the male gaze, how is not that art-pop?

Yes ARTPOP is EDM among other things, but putting it in a box of "just EDM" is one of the reasons that caused it to be so misunderstood even today, then EDM doesn't begin or end in the generic pop EDM that charted in the early 2010's, and ARTPOP doesn't sound like that anyway, some songs have really intricate structures if we compare it with what a pop song normally is, there is a lot of experimentation and influences of other genres in the album, EDM is maybe with Metal the most diverse genre and the genre with more subgenres there is now.

I am in fact a big Andy Warhol fan, i think ARTPOP is indeed very warholian even though it doesn't reference him directly in any song, and i think if he were alive today, Gaga would be his biggest muse and ARTPOP his favorite album, it has completely his sense of humor, irony and wittiness, even the songs the public deemed as just shallow sexual songs, the public deemed his art as shallow the same way back in the day.

Gaga chose the producers and we always hear how in control she is and very particular with every element of her songs. She also changed IWBWY to Dope to go against the label, they loved IWBWY and wanted to make it a single.
