When I was going around Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos doing some charity work at facilities/ workshops for disabled people, I was told not to bother donating to charity. The money never reaches the people who need it most because it just gets pocketed by corrupt people at the top.

The World Bank, for example, aided Lebanon with COVID-19 vaccines and rollout (link) but some politicians took the vaccines for themselves in violation of the procedures they themselves promised to adhere to (link).

It's sad because Lebanon already had to deal with the aftermath of the civil war that affects them to this day and increasing corruption is the last thing the people need. I'm from a Middle Eastern country that is far from progressive but one thing we dont have is high corruption. So luckily I rarely if ever have to worry about politicians jumping the line for a vaccine the people need first.

And to make it clear this isn't a cultural problem with Lebanon (since my country is somewhat similar culturally to Lebanon--both Arab), it's almost entirely institutional and that is what has to change for Lebanon to get out of this.

Yeah when root problems arent fixed superficial help to treat a symptom results in limited results unfortunately

 

Like here in Canada, after a 30 year housing boom that has led to average home prices 50% above US for example, the Government is still trying to fix it with stress tests, speculation taxes but dont fix the real reason housing is so expensive here of course those policies dont work

 

For a Nation as a whole its like Venezuela. They kept trying to fix mismagement of the economy by micromanaging everything with price controls and other regulations which only made the problem even worse not to mention corruption . I guess Lebanon is a simmilar but less extreme version of Venezuela?

Exactly! And I guess it's sort of similar to Venezuela economically in that the Lebanese Lira is extremely devalued but it's not completely worthless. Just that inflation is extremely high rn over there.

But I'm no expert just have been reading some of the coverage here and there.

Yup that's the case. We went from 1,500LBP = 1$ to 18,000LBP = 1$, and it's only rising
