I wish we could just ban politics from this forum. I miss the old days when it was only about Gaga. Nowadays it's just hate bait.

Deciding what is and isn't effective and calling it insanity is very much policing their reactions

Or it's just an opinion different from your own. Forcing everyone to have the same opinion as yourself is fascism sweetie, the very thing these people claim to be against.

Its ok. They’re just statues. Tearing them down doesn’t solve anything but its nice as a symbolic statement

Good :applause:

The monarchy means nothing today anyways, and it has contributed to some of the worst crimes in history.

What happened to those children is revolting beyond words and needs to be addressed. It's horrible but at the same time I'm glad things like that are finally coming to light, a lot of evil has been lurking beneath the surface and hidden from the public and the truth about these disgusting, obsolete institutions like the monarchy and the Church needs to come out so they can be abolished once and for all.

The two Queens were mere figureheads with no say or actual power in the actions of the Canadian government. They were not an actual dictator or commander.

You should remember that for other people across Canada and the world, they carry a lot of positive meaning and identity. Queen Elizabeth II and her father were significant during the WW2, and acted as symbols against fascism.

The picture isn't as black and white with Victoria too, she did have a symbolic role in ending slavery.

I think the residential schools are horrific, but they did happen.  Tearing down a statue is a childish way to solve a problem that requires much deeper work.

A lot of Canadians have been shocked with this act and it won't do the protestors any favours.

We can find a fair balance that supports indigenous victims that isn't knocking down culturally meaningful statues and actually does something meaningful for Canada.

Why are you indignant then if the statues of some powerless figureheads are taken down? Just saying.

They're dismantling the symbols of imperialism and colonialism. Of course this is not by itself substantive action but symbols are powerful.

The "property" you're talking about is a colonial symbol so to hell with it. Idk why anyone cares so much about statues that celebrate criminals on the grounds they colonized? And maybe it's time to also oppose the use of tax dollars to build and repair such disgusting commemorations instead of disagreeing with people destroying them.

Maybe Queen Victoria but i dunno about Queen Elizabeth

Queen Elizabeth took over in a time when Kings/Queens no longer really called the shots anymore it was parliament Government making all the decisions really

Also Canada was its own Nation already when Queen Elizabeth was born and accountable for its own actions. Any abuse taken place after an area joined Confederation no longer becomes Britains blame. Canada had enough autonomy to stop it any time it wanted to we simply chose not to

I think to say Queen Elizabeth II = Colonism and Aboriginal abuse is a stretch. It was her ancestors and well as Canadians that did this not her

I always get a laugh when people make the “that’s the not the right way to protest” argument.

The point of a protest is get people’s attention. This did that. We are talking about it now. If you disagree with taking down these statues it’s because you have a soft spot for the monarchy and have little concern for the pain the monarchy has inflicted on the world.

If you can’t handle the heat, get out the kitchen.

Gaga herself is a political figure.

Cry more.

Leoooo

The queen is a lovely Lady though, watching the crown & knowing from history, she has been through a lot and invested her life into it, and none of this is her doing, the ancestors of the monarchy really were brutal. Coming from the UK and being raised to obviously have a lot of love and respect for our royals, it’s a hard pill to swallow.
