Why was this performance so criticized?

I mean, I'm not a fan of Nicki but she got some heavy backlash, as if other artists hadn't used some religious elements in their performances before.

idk but that intro was horrible. It looks so cheap, almost like a parody

Absolutely loved this performance. Had it on repeat all the time. This song did not come out before Roman Reloaded, and this performance was maybe 3 months before the album came out. I was in high school, and in catholic youth group, and all the religious people were PRESSED. I wasn’t allowed to talk about Nicki at all after this. That was when I stopped being religious (seriously) was because I was a barb. Also I came out as bi and they said as long as I don’t act on homosexual desires I can still go to heaven. Religion is totally ****ed up.

It’s really her best performance no doubt about it. I think it was mainly just due to the whole possession thing and the religious imagery that made people freak out

It’s so strange that I never knew about this performance the time it happened :saladga:

But I like it, Gaga pressed the catholics buttons the year before and still Nicki pressed them again the following year :ladyhaha:

To be honest, not her strongest song to be performed live (she said she was supposed to perform 'Super Bass') especially because she had to censor herself in many parts. The performance was all over the place, too many things to look at. And the intro and short movie were cheesy as hell

IDK I love it and it was the performance that made me respect her a bit. I think its FUN and thats what she intended for it to be

The religious imagery was a small part of it. The beginning film didn't come off as parody but seemed like it was serious (you could hear people laughing in the audience), the singing parts were really bad and obnoxious sounding, the whole theme and meaning of the song was completely lost on people who weren't Nicki fans or knew nothing about her and she was lipsynching her raps which is a big no no on the rap scene. And also, her creative director was Laurianne Gibson, who famously was behind Gaga's Paparazzi performance and Nicki's set was choreographed after she and Gaga had parted ways on bad terms (I think, it's been so long ago, I can't remember it well) and it was clear this was highly similar to Gaga's set so it didn't go down well with Gaga fans. You'll notice that Nicki dropped the whole Roman alter ego once this era was over. It was clear that the public didn't get it, found it cringey or just weren't on board with it.
