Chauvin was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter by a Minneapolis jury in April. Floyd’s death bolstered calls for racial justice and police reform and led to massive protests against police violence and civil unrest in over 1,700 American cities. Floyd’s daughter Gianna Floyd, his nephew, Brandon Williams, and brothers, Terrence and Philonise Floyd spoke before Cahill announced his sentence. Chauvin’s mother Carolyn Pawlenty pleaded for a light sentence on behalf of her son. “The full extent of our pain and trauma will never be seen with the naked eye,” Brandon Floyd said. Chauvin did not give a full formal statement, but did express condolences to the Floyd family and alluded to "other information in the future that would be of interest" and hoped that coming information would give the family "some peace of mind." The state asked for the 30-year maximum sentence, whereas Chauvin’s lawyers asked for probation and time served. “Everyday I have begged for justice to be served,” said Philonise Floyd. “George’s life mattered ... I am asking that you please find it suitable to give Officer Chauvin the maximum sentence possible.” Cahill ruled in May that Chauvin’s abuse of power and particular cruelty toward Floyd made possible a harsher sentence for the convicted felon. Ahead of Friday’s sentencing, Cahill denied the 45-year-old’s request for a new trial, arguing his attorneys did not show the court abused its discretion or that there was any prosecutorial misconduct, per The Associated Press.
