Usually we avoid the X for gender neutral words because audio programs for deaf people can’t recognize the words or wont get the pronunciation right. In Portuguese you have a word for a group of boys and another one for a group of girls. Cut to a few years ago when feminism and gender neutral discussions started getting stronger and stronger, activists and academia people realized that might be based on how we view the world as a men’s world. And linguistics should be one of the steps we take in tearing patriarchy down and unlearning those types of behavior. So a new hunt for gender neutral pronouns started. English speaking people usually use the letter x a lot in their words. And x in a lot of cultures, math, usually means a number (or in this case a letter) who is not disclosed, so in that way, it could indicate a neutral approach to our language. But, as I said, the letter x doesn’t make sense in Latin languages, so that could be viewed as an imperialistic approach enforced on us. Not transphobic here and I hate this word. “Latino” is already gender neutral as used in the correct way. X makes absolutely no sense at the end of a word in Spanish. But the word “Latino” is already inclusive of everyone of Latin descent - male, female, non-binary, etc. Why create a new word when one already exists? It’s like all the Pride flags that keep being created.
