What she said makes total sense and y'all calling her salty is literally perpetuating the problem she was talking about :awkney:

And we wonder why fake news spreads like a wildifire and Trump was elected president. People literally can't be trusted to plausibly interpret an interview :deadbanana:

None of what she said is an attack on Meryl, her capabilities or talent. It's criticism of the Hollywood industry and society declaring Meryl as their token "We love women actors, see we don't hate women in movies, we love Meryl!" actress, while still continuously sh*tting on any female actors that are not Meryl.

She's criticizing the way she has been heralded as some sort of transcendant goddess and that she's basically the only female actress that has earned that sort of mainstream respect and acclaim. When she's saying "I know I can play villains better than Meryl", that's not really an attack on Meryl's talent. It's just an objective observation.

Sharon IS better at playing villains and she more known for playing villains. That doesn't mean that Meryl is bad at portraying them. If you really look at Meryl's work, she hasn't played a lot of "evil" villains really (only her roles in Devil Wears Prada and Death Becomes Her come to mind, maybe even remotely Margaret Thatcher because nobody really liked her lol). It's not what Meryl is really known for, she's knowing for technical, ambivalent performances of complicated women and heroines. :emma:

They really think a woman giving credit to herself and not belittling herself is her being arrogant and salty and bitter... so sad :smh: and to be fair, the interviewer themself wrote the article in a very nasty way and painted her words condescendingly

Maybe she could've put it down in a way that isn't as bitter but she has a point. I must be one of the few who believes Meryl isn't all she's cracked up to be. It's not like I've watched every movie she's been in but the ones I have seen don't seem to involve her acting in a way that I would think is above and beyond or very demanding. I can do her famous Devil Wear Prada cerulean speech just like her - if it can be easily replicated, is it really that hard? I'm even surprised she got nominated for that role. I'm sure if it were any other actress, it wouldn't be considered Oscar worthy (especially because villain roles are very difficult to get nominated for). I may get major criticism for this but...I think older actors are considered good just because they're old. We're much more impressed by acting from older actors for some reason (something I've never understood). Sorta similar to how bad behaviour from young people is called out for being inappropriate, vulgar, too much, etc. but when an older person does the same thing, it's funny, quirky and "good for them!" especially from their older peers. I feel that's totally the way it is in the acting awards world as well. It's really difficult to win an award now if you're a young actress, it's all about awarding the women who paved the way, the greats, the legends (who already have all the awards). I'm someone who strongly believes in seeing young and most importantly, new talent rising up, not the same old names repeated over and over until they die and there's no choice but to move on to new names. It's the same in music as well. We like to stick with what we know.

But the ish is that it was an “open secret” in Hollywood, not a closed one. It was described as something lots of folks knew about

Lots did, not everyone did. It was mainly between producers and executives, I doubt many actors and actresses were part of it unless they were super close to him

We know Hollywood takes a lot of luck, Meryl herself has said how many doors were slammed in her face and how she’s been called ugly at castings etc.

To discredit an actual talent and legend though?  Salty.  There are some extremely bad actors in Hollywood we could take aim at, Meryl is a legend in her own right.

The industry talks, though, and Meryl is pretty high up. Not sayin she knew but I think it’s more likely she heard something than didnt. She’s been there ages.
