Peacocks overrun Los Angeles county, bringing out the lovers and haters

Amid stalled relocation efforts due to the pandemic, parts of southern California have now reportedly become overrun with peacocks.

The large birds, which are traditionally known for their vibrant, beautiful tail feathers, have become a nuisance to many residents of the region where they run wild, the Washington Post reported. Spotted across Pasadena and in the San Gabriel Valley, just north-east of Los Angeles, hundreds of peacocks have been seen standing in homeowners’ lawns, on rooftops, and casually sauntering down city sidewalks.

“Urban sprawl caused the problem in southern California. It encroached on their territory, and basically the peacocks stayed in the trees – generations of them. In some places, it’s almost impossible to capture every single one of them,” Dennis Fett, co-founder and director of the Peacock Information Center, told Slate.

Problems with peacocks have been polarizing, dividing many communities across Pasadena, with one resident describing the issue as “more divisive than national politics”.

Some residents enjoy the presence of the peacocks. Peacock devotees often feed the birds, defying anti-feeding mandates in many municipalities. Others, however, detest the feral birds, who, in addition to their loud mating cries, are known to tear up gardens and destroy window shingles.

“It’s the most polarizing thing I’ve ever been involved with,” said Mike Maxcy, a retired curator of birds for the Los Angeles Zoo, to the Post.

In my opinion they are gorgeous and would love to have them in my backyard, unless the peacocks are causing an imbalance in the local ecosystem. Are they causing any?

They are so beautiful and actually the male peacocks make one of the most beautiful noises in the animal world. :huntyga: (and no, I'm not kidding. I really love that sound)

Well, presumably they'd be in competition with other birds, so any imbalance could cause extraneous issues in the food web. They might over-extend the current population that supplies their food too.

From what I found, they eat flowers, vegetables, snails, bugs and whatever wasted foods they can find. So it doesn't seem like something too specific in the sense that they may eat the food of another species and disbalance the ecosystem. However, I did find that they are related to the wild turkey (which is native to US). I tried to google if these two species compete for food but I didn't found anything. Their numbers are probably too small to be a problem.

Is that the noisy bird they are talking about? I bet they've never been near of tree crowded with parakeets. There is two mango trees in my backyard, and when is the time of the year they are full of mangoes, HUGE amounts of parakeets come and make extremely loud noise from early morning to late afternoon. I say that's the yearly time to get crazy

Not native of course they were brought in by wealthy people, but yes so far I have known upper class people who have peacocks as pets or ornamental lawn animals, over time the peacock population have become loose and become feral

We have an issue with parrots that escaped from an aviary :saladga:
