Relativity famously showed that time can become pretty wonky depending on how fast an observer is moving relative to another observer. If you send a person with a clock on a spaceship at near light speed, time will seem to pass more slowly for them than it would for a stationary friend left on Earth. And an astronaut falling into a black hole, whose immense gravity can warp time, might also appear to slow down relative to a distant observer.

If you were nearing a black hole, "you wouldn't notice anything different," Carroll said. "You would look at your wristwatch, and it would pass at one second per second."

For him, it makes little sense to talk about stopping time. We know that a car is moving because, at different moments of time, it's at a different location in space, he said. "Motion is change with respect to time, so time itself can't move." In other words, if time stopped, all motion would stop too. 

While sci-fi has sometimes given us protagonists who can pause time for everyone else, such situations raise a great deal of questions. "Are you stopping the air from moving?" Carroll asked. "Because if so, then you're imprisoned by the air."

"Thinking about the subjective impression of time gets interesting," Craig Callender, a philosopher who specializes in time at the University of California, San Diego, told Live Science.

He described a well-known psychological illusion known as "chronostasis," in which a person places a clock at the edge of their vision and then stares at something else for a moment. Glancing back at the timepiece and focusing on the second hand will make it pause. (It can be a quirky way to stay entertained during fifth period math class in high school.)

The question then becomes, what is the relationship between our perceptions of time and the time physicists are talking about? Callender has written a number of books that attempt to explore the connection between the two, and as yet, there isn't much consensus on a final answer.

I honestly believe this to be the case. To me, time is just a human concept to attainably compare the difference of states that things appear to have when they change space or energy values, according to a reference.

If something was isolated and it didn't change states, whether it be in space or energy, and there wasn't a perceptive observer comparing it with a different thing that was itself changing (like a clock, or a star, or a planet), would you say time exists?

As he suggests in the article, I think time is just a psychological illusion that our mind uses to "make sense" of things, kinda like language or math.

How do those equations explain aparent tìme dialations or discrepancy in clocks in fast moving objects like satelites that have to ve constantly re-adjusted

Im curious what reference? Cuz if time turned out to not be real then what we perceive as time dialation would need another explanation. :oprah:

It's always a reference defined by human observation. For example, you can only tell Earth is moving because you have stars and planets as reference to compare positions.

As for a second, it was originally defined by dividing the hours in a day into minutes and then seconds, but nowadays its reference is as stated:

The second is defined as being equal to the time duration of 9 192 631 770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the fundamental unperturbed ground-state of the caesium-133 atom.

Very sexy, I know. Humans always come up with the best references for things, just ask the Americans with their Imperial System.

I dont mean how u define a second. I mean how is it that clocks do in fact tick at different rates in fast moving objects like satelites just like Einstein said would happen and those clocks need adjustments? If time wasnt anything then that shouldnt happen :huh:

 

And i wont accept that. I wont be left hanging half way thru the novela like that with all those cliff hangers :deadbanana:

Yeah I was just answering the thing about references. Like Einstein said, a train would seem to be moving fast to someone outside the train, but it appears to be static for someone inside it.

I don't know about dilations and whatnot, but it might have to do with electromagnetism, gravity, or other forces. I mean, you can observe "time" but you only actually know it because you see a change in any other thing.

To observe those differences between different clocks, you have to have at least 2 different clocks to compare. A clock is nothing more than matter using energy to move through space, and the state change caused by that movement is perceived by us as "time". Since that matter and energy are subject to forces (and also exert forces), then maybe the difference in forces can explain the difference in "time" passing.

The question is, would time exist as an isolated concept, where no other changes occur except time itself? It's a bit out there but humans are specialists at imagining stuff :vegas:
