More than €650,000 were spent on promoting Malta’s Eurovision Song Contest entry as auditors investigate concerns that taxpayer funds were used to boost Destiny’s odds with bookmakers.

Minister Carmelo Abela has ordered an audit of the spend after he received reports that part of the allocated budget for the 10-day event was used to place bets on the Maltese performer.

Two sources close to the probe said the country dished out €650,000, split between €350,000 spent by the Malta Tourism Authority and a further €300,000 by the Public Broadcasting Service.

It is understood this amount is likely to climb to around €700,000, once the last spend is finalised.

The issue of possible financial mismanagement was flagged to Abela, the minister within the Office of the Prime Minister who is responsible for public broadcasting, by the board of the national broadcaster. “

This is TRAGIC! Both because it is most likely tax money wasted on betting odds, and manipulating Esc like that!

  • Stupid Oreo changed the title to Malta manipulated the Eurovision Odds: Je Me Cash

Such an embarrassment for my country :emma: I mean I'll wait till the audit is completed before raging at the delegation but it doesn't look good. Maybe they should spend our money on writing an original song instead of buying a generic Swedish pop reject.

Another reason why betting on eurovision acts (and in general) should be prohibited

TBH I was surprised the song didn't do better with the public vote. I didn't think it was a winner but certainly not a bad performance

This is definitely not the first time a country has been trying to push their songs. Winning the song contest results in great income for hosting it next year.

Wish the song had done better than it did because it's a bop. :music:

This was honestly so annoying.

Here I am, playing Cocomelon and other nursery rhymes for kids on Youtube and this stupid song pops up as ad (FULL SONG) every 5 minutes!:neyde:

What a waste of tax payers money. This should not be allowed. :dom:

And in the end, it didn't work... I mean yes they probably paid jury and ads but people spoke and they didn't care for the song at all... like no matter how many ads you show to the people if they don't like the song nothing will change that... it may even make people hate the song.

Also, betting odds need to be banned for Eurovision... This is proof that they are easily manipulated and sometimes jury votes based on the odds

Tbh it wasn’t great anyway, don’t know why they thought that would win.

Honestly I thought the song was great. Besides, Destiny seems really sweet and is only 18, so I'm really hoping she doesn't get harassed for something she likely had no involvement in.
