I don’t agree with Born This Way

I also think sexuality is a complex web of different factors both biological, phychological and cultural (and the ratio of how much weight factor each factor plays may even vary from one individual to the next)...

So i dont think its generally as simple as being born gay straight or bi. Or at the very least not exclusively

But i also dont think the point of the song was meant to be taken THAT literal :selena:

I understand your point but it's more of a "I am the way I am and I was destined to be like that at birth" statement.

Also the song isn't just about sexuality, it's basically about everything that makes us different from each other

Exactly what I was thinking, totally agree. I see it more as "Born TO BE this way." When you're a newborn, sexual orientation isn't the first thing on your mind, but that doesn't mean you don't already have some of the framework that will help determine your future sexuality. I think people can be born with certain "predispositions" to being gay, because even though there's no single "gay gene," there are genetic components involved (I believe I read that some of it can actually come down to hormone exposure in the womb). And then of course some of it is environmentally based. Like so many mottos, "Born This Way" is designed to be a simple statement. Lots of songs are oversimplified. Nobody's actually saying 100% of gays were 100% born that way, but I think genetics do contribute. Like I believe someone else said, I remember my same-sex attractions from as young as five as well, and I didn't really know what they meant either.

And to the OP, you make the argument that "we don’t reprimand people for having different personalities, ambitions, etc." But actually, society does that all the time. That's why laws exist; despite people's natural inclinations, there are certain things we as a society don't tolerate (I'm not talking about homosexuality. I'm only talking about behaviours that are criminalized because they cause harm). The real point is, NO MATTER WHAT causes homosexuality (which I believe is difficult to determine because there are several possible factors and they differ for each person), choice or no choice, genetic or environmental, destiny or influence, people of the same sex should be free to love each other. Homosexuality needs to be decriminalized, destigmatized, de-everything. And I still think Born This Way's effect in doing that is something to be celebrated, not scrutinized for its simplicity. Words are only as important as the meaning we give to them.

Born this way is not about being born into this life and having a static identity forever.

It is about rebirth, evolution, loving your self and accepting one other throughout each of our journeys. She’s touched on this in many interviews back in 2011/12

Check out all of the born this way era music videos through this perspective and it will make sense 😊

I must be the only one who remembers this but Gaga acknowledged that the song isn't literally about being who you are from birth but a constant rebirth through life and it's actually more about being yourself and discovering yourself.

I found it it's at about 1 minute here

Whether life's disabilities
Left you outcast, bullied, or teased
Rejoice and love yourself today
'Cause baby you were born this way

I agree. I don't think Born This Way is about whether you were born gay, or not gay.

It's about the way you ARE, today.

If you had an accident and lost your leg at 17... love yourself today.

Gaga said her mental illness is part of who she is. Was she born with PTSD? She has accepted what can, and can't be changed.

Love yourself today.

The better message would be "no matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian or transgendered life, nobody cares, you are all gonna die either way, life is meaningless"
