UK: EU citizens are being locked up and expelled

“EU citizens are being sent to immigration removal centres and held in airport detention rooms as the UK government’s “hostile environment” policy falls on them after Brexit, according to campaigners and travellers interviewed by the Guardian.

Europeans with job interviews are among those being denied entry and locked up. They have spoken of being subjected to the traumatic and humiliating experience of expulsion, despite Home Office rules that explicitly allow non-visa holders to attend interviews.”

These accounts from people on this article were from February.

Why would people go to a country and be allowed to feely roam whilst looking for Jobs in the middle of a pandemic?

The country was in lockdown at this time. I don't think "exploring the job market" is a very reasonable excuse for travelling here at that time.

Whether correct to be detained and deported or not they shouldn't have came here at that time.

It still doesn’t justify them being treated like sub-humans. We see in Glasgow today people’s homes are getting raided and people getting raided

We literally closed our borders with Europe due to the pandemic.  This overrules the regular travel rules we have allowing people to enter the country without a visa for job interviews etc.

Another thread with an agenda against the UK... shock! :trollga:

Not at all. It’s my agenda against Brexit and the toxic anti-immigration policy of Priti Patel, like what’s happening in Glasgow today.

Protecting the people of the United Kingdom against a deadly virus is not a “toxic anti-immigrant policy.”

People travelling to the U.K. during a pandemic from countries that have high case numbers of the virus and endangering us all deserve to be kicked out.

Treating people with contempt is not right. They should not be travelling but they deserve to be treated with respect.

Being sent to what is effectively a holding bay before deportation is not disrespectful.  Especially if you could be carrying a super infectious virus and infecting the rest of that country’s population.  It’s a shame we couldn’t stop them coming in or jet them out immediately.

Doll, it’s not “hate towards the UK”. I am just positing news. I am critising the immigration policy of the UK Government. I am doing useful things with my life. Just spending time on this forum

You literally post multiple threads a day that are negative about the United Kingdom but praise Scotland?  You’re just a nationalist troll and I’m shocked the mods allow it :laughga:

Not at all. If the Government did something positive I would post it, same if Scotland did something bad. Like when Nicola Sturgeon was going through the stuff with Salmond I was posting threads about it.

This is a typical immigration and border security procedure. The problem is that EU citizens are not used to these measures and I suspect Brits aren't either.

When I lived in Spain before Brexit, it was super easy to visit home. There were no questions about my intention there, I go back and forth as much as I liked. It gave me a naïve view of immigration.

However when I lived in China, Vietnam and now Canada, border officers need to know your exact purpose for entry. Even the smallest question mark in your paperwork or explanation will need questioning and potentially detainment. As a visitor to a country, you are responsible for your entry.

The US, Australia, New Zealand and the EU all do this for temporary residents that aren't tourists.

Coming to a country to find work but entering as a tourist is actually not a wise idea, especially if they mention anything about it to security. The reason is that temporary visitors must be showing reasons for a short visit and prove they will return home.

There was also an individual going to do an unpaid internship. These internships are problematic for immigration because they can be easily disguised as cash-in-hand jobs or human trafficking.

COVID-19 exacerbated these problems because travel (even for work) is theoretically prohibited. I don't doubt some of these arrivals were unfairly treated though, but it is during a pandemic when the system needs to be as tight as possible.
