Used in the Great Depression and other eras. It was made as a fashion statement in the 70s and popularized by rappers. Manelik II emperor of Ethiopia used to wear Durags, and he himself owned slaves as well. It's an American thing to *react* to cultural appropriation because, on account of our country's history, we have a special and particularly insidious brand of racism cooked into our culture.
