Jewellery brand will stop selling mined diamonds

Pandora has become the first big jeweller to turn its back on mined diamonds, with the switch to lab-grown stones billed as making diamond jewellery more affordable.

On Tuesday the mass-market brand, best known for its charm bracelets, launched Pandora Brilliance, which it described as its “first lab-created diamond collection”. The range, which includes earrings, necklaces and rings, features lab-grown stones made in the UK, with prices starting at £250.

Concerns about the environment and working practices in the mining industry have led to growing demand for alternatives to mined diamonds. Pandora sells 85m trinkets a year, but only 50,000 feature diamonds making it a small player in the gems market.

Pandora said demand for lab-grown diamonds was growing faster than the overall diamond jewellery market. The stones – which are identical to mined ones in terms of optics and chemical characteristics – are graded by the same standards as mined ones known as the “4Cs” – cut, colour, clarity and carat.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but if people stop selling mined diamonds won’t that just increase the value and desire for them? If so I worry that would increase the violence and bloodshed over these things in other countries. 

Natural diamonds are already rare and not easy to obtain which is why people lose their lives over them. Wouldn’t make them more rare worsen the situation?

The point here is to reduce the demand, so they lose value, since value is heavily determined by demand. Of course, some rich bastards will still want their "natural" diamonds like they want their "natural" leathers and furs, but as society starts seeing those as uncool, rich people will also start losing interest in these things, since their whole point is to show off how cool they are.

I won a one ct. Leo diamond from Jared in a raffle (I was 13 and my mom ended up having to pay the taxes on it lmao). We got it cleaned and reappraised a few years ago with hopes to sell it or put it in a new setting to raise the value. We were told that while diamonds are expensive to purchase, the resale market for diamonds is worthless. If bigger retailers (at least in the US) make this shift to ethically sourced stones and lab-created diamonds, I'm hopeful that it would reduce the desire for them. People will still buy them, but it wouldn't be huge retailers by the bulk. 

Also shocked Pandora is one of the first to make this move, tbh.

If they will stop being used by jewellery brands (hypotetically, because this scenario is stil very far way) they loose their commercial appeal. They won't be searched as extensively and won't be demanded. but I think you have a point (especially if only some brands will keep selling them, or they could be sold on the black market). I don't think people want them only or primarely because of their beauty, but because their economic value to being with.

If you don't made me asking how was the price comparison to a ring made from "new" materials? If it's more affordable this sounds like a great option!

I personally don't like most diamond jewelry precisely because the unethical sourcing, it makes it very ugly and tacky to me in like a spiritual sense lol but recycled sounds awesome!
