In my mind a reference was more a throwback to a previous song from a previous era.  But thinking about it there is nothing that stops songs from referencing other songs from the same album.

Oh yeah I missed that one!

I remember when the Tom Ford video came out and everybody (inc myself) thought that that would be indicative of LG5's sound  

This version is great but for some reason I like the Tom Ford version better?  Her voice sounds more 'raw' if that makes sense.
