Frances McDormand makes Oscars history, second-most Best Actress wins ever

Magic Mike

I find it peculiar that for the first time the Oscars don’t go for the classical narrative form. It’s historic also because of the shape of this film. Although I must add that, even if I feel empathy for the real figures, the fiction has reality has a product placement , which feels like fake poverty.

It’s unfair that Terrence Malick, the one that inspired Chloé to shoot the way she films (details of hands, divine POVs, the sunset skies, the steady cam...), never got his deserved Oscar. Also this is like a rip off of To the Wonder.

Nevertheless I’m OK with this win, hopefully it opens a new age for film in Hollywood, when saying you don’t need glamour or special effects to do a good object.

That said, I find it really lukewarm but also obscene when the close ups with background stories are followed by manipulating music, dictating how should I feel, but let’s not forget we’re still at Hollywood innit

I think the academy is quite often shooting themselves in the foot by not awarding more up-and-coming actors when they have the chance... It creates situations where people like Kate Winslet end up being awarded for movies everybody forgot about, and not for their actual greatest roles. I also think Carey should have won, Frances really didn’t need another Oscar, she literally has nothing left to prove. I had similar feelings when Gary Oldman won over Timothée Chalamet a few years ago, like... OK, Oldman’s Oscar was long overdue, but not for that part. Not when there was a literal career-making performance next to it.

they still have never awarded Glenn Close even though she deserved it for Dangerous Liaisons and then Jodie Foster won again like 4 years later

Agree with Timothee.

But this Carey Mulligan's performance is really overrated on Twitter. I watched it and it's the screenplay that did all the magic. The acting is just fine but nothing award-worthy imo. People crowned her as frontrunner this year because Mcdormand was already a 2-time winner. People want new faces. I'm glad every major industry award went to other contenders except Mulligan. She can wait for her future projects anyway.

Also, Oscars actually tend to award young actress and old actor so it's bit wrong to say this. We got Jennifer Lawrence, Brie Larson,  and Emma Stone as recent cases.

Mulligan is not a newcomer though, she was first nominated in 2009. i also saw the film and her performance is so layered and emotional, she ran the full gamut be it from over the moon happy to down in the depths to a ranging anger to coy to playful to vixen. McDormand was bland boring giving us the same performance we have seen from her several times. she deserved her earlier 2 wins. this win she did not deserve, it was highway robbery plain and simple.

also... she can wait for her future projects? TF does that even mean.

in the last 30 years there have been 8 BA winners under 30 and 22 over 30. so that’s not too much of a focus on the young actresses.

Stay pressed.

Let the winners enjoy their moments instead of still pressed about your own fav. Even film Twitter and most Mulligan fans there looked peaceful today because we all knew Mcdormand could have swept this season if she didn't win just 3 years ago. That's said, people know she deserved the win. Your takes on their performances are laughable and disrespectful. A subtle performance can be hard to present. "Bland"? Go click one Nomadland clip on Youtube and say that again. Maybe transformative/biopic performances or dramatic characters with heavy makeup & wide range of emotions suit your taste better.  I'm glad every industry award thought the same and went to everyone but Mulligan. Mulligan's performance in PYW is just not that strong; otherwise, it could have been easy for her to sweep awards (not the critic ones) this year, considering how much PYW was loved by the industry and the fact that Mcdormand/Davis were previous winners.

"She can wait for her future projects?" Ugh yes she can win in the future for a more deserved performance, same thing for Viola Davis. Not that hard to understand.

And sorry, Mulligan is at 35 so I think we're not talking about actresses under 30. It IS a fact that the averaged age of actress winners is lower than the one of actor winners, though.

Say you're not a Frances McDormand fan without saying it :triggered:

We get it. The legend won though and we will celebrate THAT

I actually love her, so try again :ladyhaha: She just wasn't my pick for last night, and I explained my reasoning.

That's true, they don't always get it wrong. But when they do, oh boy...

True, that's why everyone thought Glenn would get it a couple years ago for a movie everybody forgot about.
