What a legend. I loved Three Billboards so much that when she won and made that speech I thought she’d go hide again for a while. Can’t believe she came back so strong with this project. Well deserved.

I think the academy is quite often shooting themselves in the foot by not awarding more up-and-coming actors when they have the chance... It creates situations where people like Kate Winslet end up being awarded for movies everybody forgot about, and not for their actual greatest roles. I also think Carey should have won, Frances really didn’t need another Oscar, she literally has nothing left to prove. I had similar feelings when Gary Oldman won over Timothée Chalamet a few years ago, like... OK, Oldman’s Oscar was long overdue, but not for that part. Not when there was a literal career-making performance next to it.

Yeah, a lot of Oscar wins are very questionable. Elizabeth Taylor won her first Oscar for Butterfield 8, a movie she personally hated and that has been mostly forgotten. A lot of people thought it was a "pity win" because she'd lost her three previous nominations -- and she was SO robbed for Suddenly Last Summer and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

The same goes for Geraldine Page. Her performance in Sweet Bird of Youth was much better than her performance in The Road to Bountiful, but she got the Oscar for the latter rather than the former.

Also, I will go to my grave saying that Bette Midler deserved the Oscar for The Rose over Sally Field in Norma Rae.

Holy cow I thought sure Viola was going to win. I'm thrilled for Frances.

Say you're not a Frances McDormand fan without saying it :triggered:

We get it. The legend won though and we will celebrate THAT

Timothee did not deserve that award, sorry

She is the unique queen in Hollywood.

Hardworking, no publicity, straightforward, intelligent, fearless, and confident.

A great and respectable actress of our generation.

Agree with Timothee.

But this Carey Mulligan's performance is really overrated on Twitter. I watched it and it's the screenplay that did all the magic. The acting is just fine but nothing award-worthy imo. People crowned her as frontrunner this year because Mcdormand was already a 2-time winner. People want new faces. I'm glad every major industry award went to other contenders except Mulligan. She can wait for her future projects anyway.

Also, Oscars actually tend to award young actress and old actor so it's bit wrong to say this. We got Jennifer Lawrence, Brie Larson,  and Emma Stone as recent cases.

Not you saying this when The Countess referenced that movie in AHS :stalkga:

i lover her sm but she had the weakest/ least memorable performance out of all the nominees for me :/

like i've seen this from her before. nothing new. nothing different, viola was ma rainey. andra became billie holiday. carrie was amazing, hell even vanessa kirby had a more memorable performance. disappointed.

OK, I will admit, I was being a bit hyperbolic. It's just that when people discuss memorable Liz Taylor performances, Butterfield 8 usually isn't even in the Top 5. Usually you hear more about Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Cleopatra, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Raintree County, Suddenly Last Summer, National Velvet, The Taming of the Shrew, and Giant.

(Fun story about Giant: Liz and Rock Hudson had a running bet on which one of them would sleep with James Dean first. Rock Hudson won.)

(Another fun story: Liz was one of the OG gay besties in Hollywood. She literally saved Montgomery Clift's life after a car crash when they were filming Raintree County.)

Also, I still stand by the assessment that Liz was completely robbed and should have won for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Her husband had just died in a plane crash, and she was still grieving during the filming, and she still managed to pull off one of the best performances of her career.
