Kadikaado 4,302
I am shocked that Chadwick Boseman didn't win. I believed he was going to win, even though most critics I heard said that he wasn't the protagonist of the movie and was wrongly nominated, that he was suposed to be nominated best support actor. Since the pandemic started I haven't been able to go the cinema, so I didn't watch 5% of the movies, I hope I will be able to watch them soon. 5 hours ago, President Biden said: didnt watch and really don’t care. Whereas the Grammys are too commercially driven, the Oscars have become a movie list of films that 99% of the general populous have never ****ing heard of. And most of the time they’re winners are shitty “artistic” movies with predominately white casts and either a cliche political message or something British. What do you want? MCU movies nominated for an Oscar? They aren't even remotely good enough to be there. The only movies like that that I can remember with an actual story are Joker and the Batman that gave Heath Ledger an oscar, superhero movies are just an excuse for explosions, fights and visual effects. You don't hear about other films because superhero films overshadow any other type of movie. But trust me, these films nominated for an Oscar are far from art movies. Art films run in a very restricted screening and aren't made for profit, basically just festivals air them. Almost all of the movies nominated on Oscar have had theatrical releases and had a box office to justify their production, they were also made by big studios that don't do charity or art for the sake of art. You need to find a balance between comercial and art and most of the nominated films are in this category. You can't give a best actor Oscar for an actor plating the 100th version of spider-man with a shallow repetitive screenplay. The only thing I can complain about the Academy is the excessive nominations for war movies, apart from that they are pretty fair. Best movies display the human condition, they tell important stories, not a just bunch of grown up men who took lots of steroids fighting for jewels because of a shallow villain plot that's just the excuse for special effects and fight scenes and fanservice. I am authistic, so don't be offended if I make a mess sometimes.

It's so refreshing to see a woman who looks the age she is and great for it!! That's what I love most about McDormand. She just doesn't give a damn about all the glitz and glamour, and it's really refreshing. In a lot of ways, she reminds me of Bette Davis. While Davis is often remembered as a very glamorous old Hollywood star (and rightfully so), as her career continued, she was far more focused on the craft of acting and gave zero f***s about any of the other Hollywood BS. Magic Mike 2,739
we shouldn’t care about the Oscars not because “people never heard of the nominated films” but because they’re simply not good or don’t offend / take us out of the comfort zone enough

Or at least saying Chadwick will win but Hopkins SHOULD win. I think a lot of voters probably thought CB was a lock too so decided they'd vote for AH. I haven't seen The Father and will never see it bc the subject matter is too close to home but everyone said it was an acting masterclass. Yeah, I think that’s what happened. I think a similar thing occurred when Olivia Colman won her Oscar over Glenn Close. A lot of voters probably thought Glenn would win and so they just voted for someone who they thought should win, and that was Olivia. I have no doubt he would have won an Oscar eventually but Ma Rainey was not it. That’s not the reason he was nominated doll. He turned in a sublime performance in Ma Rainey, he embodied his role & showed just how brilliantly he had perfected his craft. That’s why I feel like he should’ve been honored. Not taking away from Hopkins masterful performance, I was truly moved by his work.

What an amazing film I was rooting for Better Days as it was one of the best films I have seen the last few years. Excited to watch Another Round after their win though! Most said CB would win (bc he passed) , but AH deserved it more based on performances. 😇

I’m sure there were some voters who felt stronger about honoring in his work given his passing, but ultimately his work called for recognition. Just like it was when Health Ledger died. He was fantastic in that role but I don't think it would have been a typical Oscar winning role if not for him dying. From what I can glean from Oscar commentary, this was not CBs best performance and his projected win was very much based on needing to get him an Oscar for his last role. His work was recognised. He was nominated. 😇
