Frances only recently won a Best Actress Oscar, I haven't seen her performance but that makes me predict against her. Has Viola ever won Best Actress? I know she won Best Supporting Actress for Fences but maybe this is the time they'll recognise a black actress in a leading category.

She hasn’t which is why I really thought she was gonna win early on. The only reason I say Frances is because Nomadland is going to walk away with at least four other Oscars, and I wouldn’t be surprised if best actress was part of the package they won (especially since her performance is the best of the bunch).

I want Viola to win the most though.

My ranking is:

1. Carey Mulligan

2. Frances McDormand

3. Viola Davis

4. Andra Day

5. Vanessa Kirby

I’m a simple guy to please, if you like Melodrama, we chill.

Will she tho? If movie comes out late November will it make the timeline?

around November is when movies who want Awards get released, so they're fresh in people's minds

My Predictions:

Best Picture: Nomadland
Best Director: Chloe Zhao / Nomadland
Best Actress: Francis McDormand / Nomadland (though Vanessa Kirby should be winning this)
Best Actor: Chadwick Boseman (Anthony Hopkins could win it too)
Best Supporting Actress: You Yuh-Jung
Best Supporting Actor: Daniel Kaluuya

i'm truly hoping Carey Mulligan wins best actress for Promising Young Woman - i'm rarely left stunned by films but wow did this movie hit me! It's such a powerful and layered performance and it's directed brilliantly - It deserves some love.

I predict PYW is winning original screenplay but actress is so up in the air compared to past years. Although I'd be happy if Viola Davis or Frances McDormand won here too.

Ï could be your girlfriend for the weekend...

Not sure if the Academy will want to give Francis McDormand her third Oscar?

And I am sure the Academy will go for racial diversity this year so they can go back to white winners next year.

I've seen none of the best film nominees. And none of the movies really appeal to me. I can't her judge on merit but it would be nice to see a female director win.

It would be nice to see Chadwick win but I won't be mad if Anthony Hopkins wins either (though I'm sure social media would freak out and start hating on him 🙄). Just bc someone popular passes it shouldn't mean they're automatically given an Oscar.

I was reading about the ceremony and it sounds like a logistical nightmare. Nominees will be schlepped in and out for their category like cattle as the venue only holds 170 people.  They should have just cancelled it.

Magic Mike

Tbh I found every nominated film mediocre unfortunately. But Im rooting for the blunt Nomadland, because it at least defies the classical narrative structure that has been the norm

Andra was the only good part of a not so good movie, Viola was part of something where she was an equal in the sum of its parts if that makes sense. Imo Viola was a little better, but Andra was amazing.

The best actress race is the hardest category I’ve ever predicted, every single nominee except Vanessa Kirby has won one of the precursors, so it’s really hard to say. Honestly I don’t think Andra or Viola will win, my bet is on Frances and Carey.

I know people have started predicting Frances after her BAFTA win and since Nomadland is more than likely taking BP and director. But I just don’t see her winning actress. She’s already won 2 times and will be winning another one tonight since she’s got a producer credit on Nomadland.

I really think viola or Carey could take it. Kinda leaning towards Carey purely based on their track record. But Andra is a dark horse. Her performance blew me away and she really deserves. I would be extremely happy if viola or andra won tonight. Carey would be fine too Cuz I feel like she really missed out on a lot of awards this season so this could make up for it, but I’m reaaaally hoping for viola or andra.

Now-

Not only is Vanessa not going to win but she’s going to be the least voted on best actress this year lol. Her movie lost all its steam, she has won 0 precursors and most people lowkey forgot she was even nominated 😭

Best Picture win + Best Actress/Best Actor win happens very very rarely... The last time it happened was in 2011 when The Artist won Best Picture + Best Actor, and The year before in 2010 The King's Speech won Best Picture + Best Actor.

Last time a movie won Best Picture + Best Actress was in 2005 (Million Dollar Baby).

The last time a movie won Best Picture + Best Actor + Best Actress was The Silence of the Lambs in 1991.

I feel like the movies weren't as strong as past years but still managed to enjoy most of them. I think the winners are pretty obvious at this point except for Lead Actress but wish Actor would go to Anthony or Riz instead of Chadwick.

Nomadland is a beautiful movie but I'd have voted for The Father, Sound of Metal or Promising Young Woman.
