911 lyrics - meaning

So I just watched the 911 video again and I noticed a line, that I haven't really thought about much before. Then I looked at the lyrics and was wondering if they are right?

"My mood's shifting too manic places"

Shouldn't it be "My mood's shifting to manic places" ? I looked at the little booklet from the CD and there it's also "too" - I guess this is a mistake, right?

And then I noticed another thing: In the video she is "rolling" her eyes while she sings those lines... Doesn't it mean that someone is bipolar, if your mood shifts to "manic places"? When you're bipolar you have depressive phases and you have manic phases and your mood can shift real quickly too, so the time between phases can take hours, days, weeks, months and with some people even years.

Do you think Gaga wanted to say with this line that she is bipolar? Or could it just be a thing to say to express that your mood can also shift to "manic places" because of anxiety, depression etc. ? ( I just thought that only people who have a bipolar disorder have manic phases - could this also be the case with other mental issues?)

Spoiler

Does anyone have a bipolar disorder and could give some insight and talk about their experiences? (Or could answer me some questions )

i'm not sure but i love the mania is referring to when she had a psychotic break

not a professional by any means but i believe psychotic breaks can include mania

also in terms of the too vs to it should be to, i think it was an error

hard to even fathom which parts you should believe

It could be a case that she will write all the lyrics she wants to say in the song, but in order for it to find the melody (sylables and timing etc) She will just let it run unsensically?

Like the original line could have read "My moods shifting too, manic places"

I know she writes songs like poems, and poems can be very strange in their layout

Good for noticing that! I never did!

Yeah, that was my first thought, but then there should be a comma (like you did) , so I guess it's actually a mistake. (Although in songwriting there are no commas, right?) :mark:

Yeah exactly! commas and obvious sense are never invited to a Gaga studio session, thank goodness :icega:

With PTSD can come with mania, so maybe like she’s explaining the mania that can come when she is triggered. But the anti psychotic that she’s referring [ Olanzipine ] is one that people with Bipolar Disorder or Schizophrenia take. So maybe she is i have know idea, :ohwell: bipolar people can be very creative.

Guys as someone who is type 3 bipolar and a psychic empath, for years I have just thought gaga probably was bipolar. I'm in no way trying to diagnose her or say for sure, it's just my opinion. There's lots of people who have been misdiagnosed cuz until recently there was only believed to be two types of bipolar. The type 3 is so minor in the amount of said "shifts" that you are often not even diagnosed at first as bipolar, which is dangerous cuz an antidepressant alone in any type of bipolar can cause you to get locked in the manic state, but if you are thought to have bipolar the medication they give you can quite often make things way worse than without. I suffered years of trying this med trying that med and finally just screaming enough. It took me a long time to come to terms with not feeling shame for refusing medication anymore, but my psychiatrist and therapist and doctor all agreed it was fine if they monitored my swings. I was misdiagnosed at 19 years old and just this year I was properly diagnosed with type 3 and I just turned 34. So over 10 years I was always in fear that I'd end up needing medication and now I realize I probably won't so I don't have to feel guilty or crazy but type 3 is so bizarre cuz I'll be fine for months then all of a sudden boom my mood's shifting to manic places and then it lasts for a couple hours or 24 hours at longest and then I'm fine again. Same with depression, sometimes fine for months then boom out of the blue my mind suddenly tells me ok you are going to cry over losing your pen and you spend the day in bed. Lol it's just crazy how lowkey it is and I'm saying from the energy I pick up psychically from gaga I'd almost bet she's type 3 bipolar. Even her lyrics give me that energy. I have fibromyalgia too and honestly chromatica hits me so much different than most of y'all cuz I feel like she's writing about my life and some of the things she wrote about just doesn't all sync up to just about PTSD or the trauma from the experience that caused PTSD. Take fun tonight, that song, it just hits harder when you are like, "yo.. YO.. is she singing about what I think she is?" And it's just a guess based on experience with it as well as having hyperintuition being able to see auras and really feel other people's emotions and physical pain and illnesses, I wouldn't be surprised if she talks about it (being diagnosed) one day . But you all are right though mania is not super exclusive to bipolar disorder. This is just my opinion and educated guess based on my experience and my personal ability with being a psychic empath 🤷‍♂️ I hope that this helps explain a lil about bipolar though and how there is a lesser form of the disorder.

Hi. Writer and actor and filmmaker here. It's weird but I've NEVER met someone who is bipolar that isn't in some way artistic. You are very correct, and very correct about the triggered part as well. It's called anxiety/panic induced mania

Thanks for your post! So did I get this right? You don’t take medication anymore right? Because with type 3 it’s very difficult? And u believe Gaga is type 3?

I have recently learned about the different types of bipolar disorder and I am pretty sure that I have it. (At least a mild form)

Can you believe that I just started reading about mental health issues last year and only because of Gaga? I didn’t even know what bipolar means until last year...

But I have always wondered why I have such high phases and also such low phases... and this is way different than just having a bad day ...   I thought I have a depression, but then I asked myself why I have days or phases where I feel like I could basically „conquer the world“... and people around me even noticed when my mood is y‘know like „too good“

I can be fine for weeks and then sometimes my mood shifts so quickly - it can all even be in 1 day with me - in the morning and throughout the day I can be very depressed, sad, without motivation and just feel like **** even without a proper reason... and then usually at night I can have a „manic phase“ and my thoughts are racing, I have so many ideas 💡 and just wanna be creative and cannot sleep because I feel like I need to do stuff...

I have this quite often - the thing is that I believe my depressive phases aren’t that bad that I would hurt myself and my „manic phases“ are not in a way that I lose control and do stuff that can be dangerous... last year I had a phase where (for my normal standards) I spent way too much money... it’s really exhausting sometimes... I have had this for over a decade I believe and just thought it’s normal for me. When I read about it I was a bit shocked tbh

I also believe I have the type 3 - haven’t had it diagnosed yet... I’m actually a bit ashamed. :( I know I shouldn’t be but I always feel like something is wrong with me or my brain. I don’t want my family to think they failed me or something like that.

and yes, I am a very creative person. Always have been

That’s interesting. I wonder why that is? Maybe it’s linked somehow. It would be cool if there was done more research on  this right?

I also believe that creative people are very empathetic and also sensitive & emotional people.

Yeah I just read what that medication is usually for. It says that it’s there to stabilize your mood too and i read that it helps if u disassociate.

Chromatica Island

Well, as someone who has different mental health issues, I have had meltdowns that felt like I was going insane and shifting to manic places so to speak, you don't have to have bipolar to feel this way either. I mean I have Autism, Anxiety, depression, and ocd. I've been put through the wringer with my mental health, I have been in and out of mental hospitals 5 times, so I know what she is talking about. I think the too is a typo as well. 911 describes my mental health, I also take medications so it really speaks to me on a spiritual level, I fell like she wrote it for me, sounds insane I know lol.

I feel you honey, bipolar is hereditary on my moms side and It’s a high chance that I get it because I have been sort of experiencing the symptoms of it. The 2 weeks of sleeping, the 1-2 days of feeling happy and good with yourself and then going back to the sleeping. It’s not a fun illness, which is why i kind of instantly clicked on this gaga daily thread because 911 is one of the songs on chromatica that i genuinely relate to. I used to take an anti depressant after a suicide attempt and for like 2 months it was fine and then they just stopped working and after that things got kinda bad, and then chromatica came out and since i’m like in my mid teens i didn’t really get to experience TF, TFM, BTW and ARTPOP as a whole album and got to know the actual meanings of those songs and now i finally get to. so know ur not alone here. you always have a home with us :) .

Wow. You check all the boxes cuz you described me to a t as well. My advice is to see a therapist, for no particular reason, don't go in thinking I'm here cuz I'm probably bipolar, but discuss your concerns and symptoms with the therapist and if they think you should see a psychiatrist for diagnosis then take that next step but just be so careful with the meds if they decide you might need it. If it's an antidepressant be aware cuz it could lock you into a manic phase even if it's a antidepressant specific to bipolar, and mood stabilizer is tricky cuz it takes so long to build up in your system but the problem I personally had with lithium and other mood stabilizers is that I was on for 2 years thinking this is great it's helping but not realizing I was incapable of feeling any emotion. Like I went through the loss of a friend due to overdose during that time and everyone was like what's wrong with you you're not even sad and I was mortified cuz I literally wasn't sad I wasn't angry I was like a zombie. Let me be clear though I'm not telling you that meds are bad I'm just telling you and anyone to just pay attention to your symptoms and moods cuz 80% of people have amazing proactive therapeutic effects from their mental health drugs but 20% have issues and a lot of times they don't realize it until it's too late. See everyone thinks it's the depressive phase in bipolar where people kill themselves and get suicidal, but truth is it's more common for that to happen in a manic episode than a depressive episode because when you are manic you act on impulse and so if you think it you're more likely to do it where as if you're feeling depressed and get some of those thoughts they tend to just be thoughts that we process internally cuz you are overthinking when depressed and lack motivation to even get up 🤷‍♂️ I mean that's not to say it doesn't happen, it's just important to realize that it's more likely to happen during mania. Like you said impulsive purchases and what not we don't have a filter while manic so I think that is why so many of us are creative cuz we put that energy into something so we don't go around telling everyone what we think and just doing whatever pops into our heads 🤣 but I would see a therapist first and ease into it because therapy is key in managing type 3 cuz it comes and goes I was in therapy for years got what I needed and then for years I managed on my own with the tools my therapist gave me to do so and then the pandemic hit and isolation so I went back after 4 years of being on my own. There's truly no shame. And if you think your family wouldn't understand, you don't have to tell them. This is your struggle and your journey and you don't have to tell anyone until you are ready to if you're ever ready to. I think you would be surprised at how much people are empathetic to these things now, and try to develop a dark sense of humor too it does help to be able to laugh about it instead of always it being this super serious thing. My brother's wife is bipolar and my niece is too so I always laugh when the weather in the midwest changes minute to minute and I'll tell my brother this weather is more bipolar than the 3 of us combined 🤣 just know you have nothing to be ashamed of, you didn't ask for this, I also believe that the universe or god or whatever you believe in in terms of spirituality, I believe everything happens for a reason and that we are going through what we do cuz we have some cosmic lesson to learn and our suffering is only to shape us into who we're meant to be. I suffer a lot of physical pain from my fibromyalgia and there's days it just seems like why is this happening but it's also taught me a whole new compassion towards pain in general including mental and emotional pain like no two people handle pain the same way this includes the mental and emotional side too, so if you see someone and you think why are you falling apart over this, it helps knowing ok this might not be bad to me but it is to you it has totally helped me understand why people act a certain way sometimes and it really helps me be more forgiving, understanding and aware of this when I take something personally I'm like ok that came from a place of pain I'm not going to take offense. There's always a more divine purpose to our struggles so don't ever be ashamed. You are 100% valid and important despite any illness or struggle you face! 🧡💛

And yes sorry I forgot to say, no I don't take any medication as of right now, I suffer insomnia so I take a benzodiazepine for sleep only when I really need it and I take medication for fibromyalgia but that sucks too because the major affective effective treatment for fibromyalgia is a nerve medication called lyrica in combination with an antidepressant usually cymbalta or amitriptyline or nortriptyline and I take lyrica but every antidepressant I tried for pain just locked me into mania and it sucks cuz my pain could probably be managed with the drug combination but everytime I tried it was like ok so I guess I'm up for 6 days straight I think it's time to stop the meds 🤣 but everyone is different so if they suggest meds don't be afraid to try just be hyper aware of how they make you feel. Stick with it for 2 months if you can but you know your body so if after 7 days you know something is wrong don't wait tell your doctor or your psychiatrist right away. Most mental health drugs usually take at least a month if not 2 months before you start noticing the therapeutic benefits from them so remember that as well cuz my psychiatrist drilled that into my head when I'd be like it's not working lol he'd be like dude it's been 2 weeks you got to give it time 🤣
