BUtterfield 8 41,816 Posted April 20, 2021 Share Posted April 20, 2021 Two men were killed after a Tesla car crashed into a tree and caught fire in Texas, and police believe there was nobody present in the driver's seat at the time of the accident. The 2019 Tesla Model S was travelling at a high speed when it failed to negotiate a curve on a winding road. The victims, both in their 50s, were found in the front passenger seat and in the back of the vehicle. Tesla's Elon Musk said data recovered so far showed Autopilot wasn't enabled. Mark Herman, Harris County Precinct 4 constable said that “no-one was driving the vehicle at the time of impact”, adding that the case was still under investigation. Tesla Chief Executive Mr Musk, however, tweeted: "Data logs recovered so far show Autopilot was not enabled... Moreover, standard Autopilot would require lane lines to turn on, which this street did not have." Tesla's Autopilot is an advanced driver assistance system that Tesla says "enhances safety and convenience behind the wheel". Autopilot requires your hands to be on the wheel too, so if no one was sitting in the drivers seat it'd be like 10x harder to even keep it in autopilot. Seems sketch.. Gallons of water to extinguish it because the batteries kept reigniting... I had no idea lithium was so dangerous, really makes me question the overall safety of these vehicles... Which is why I always found these kind of news suspicious, just to give bad press to Tesla. I do not own one, but I know the very basics of how autodrive works enough to not feel suspicious of them malfunctioning, but rather human error.
