Uber and Lyft have a driver shortage problem, and it’s costing them a lot of money.

 

Uber and Lyft have a driver shortage problem. With the number of US-based drivers for both apps down around 40 percent, the two companies are pledging to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to lure people back into the driver seat.

Uber announced Wednesday that it was launching a $250 million “stimulus” for drivers in the hopes of speeding their return to the platform. 

Lyft, meanwhile, is covering the cost of rental cars, offering $800 bonuses to drivers to return to the app, and doling out extra cash to drivers when a trip lasts longer than nine minutes, according to the Financial Times.

 

According to data from Apptopia, the number of US-based drivers logging into Uber during the first three months of 2021 was down 37.5 percent year over year. Lyft saw a 42.3 percent drop over the same period.

This next paragraph made me sick to my stomach.

 

Last year, both companies were focused on reducing costs, and often that meant actively constraining its supply of drivers. In its last earnings report, Lyft said it had to block new drivers from joining the app in some markets, while reducing its spending on marketing and other incentives. “Given the effect on demand, we were able to reduce driver acquisition and incentive spend, which had a positive impact on our financial results,” Lyft CEO Logan Green said in an earnings call.

 

You can blame the pandemic all you want CEO's of Uber and Lyft but if you push people into poverty wages they will leave pandemic or no pandemic. It's why they haven't returned.

Blocking new drivers is not much different from a company not hiring anymore once they have the staff they want for the time being. Companies dont just hire all the time non stop

Not the hiring. The part where they cut incentives. Actively hurting the amount of money that goes into a driver's pocket. Girl, why would I be mad at the fact they can't hire anymore.

The article doesn't say but there used to be incentives where drivers would received bonuses on the weekends and for number of rides given, as well as driving during peak hours.

I live in San Antonio and have relied on Uber/Lyft for transportation for 1 1/2 years now (until I get my own car again), and its gotten really really bad these past few months. Drivers on Uber are almost impossible to find, and when you do finally get one rates to my job shoot up from $10 to almost $60 for no reason. I've had to start using Lyft. Prices are much lower overall but still almost double during most times of the day and the closest drivers are often 15-25 minutes away. I often find myself spending 5-10 minutes just switching between apps trying to find a driver. It was not like this even towards the end of last year, drivers were not an issue and rates were normal. This has only started getting bad these last few months. Not to mention I've been late multiple times these past couple of months because I'll wait 10-15 minutes for my driver to get here only for them to cancel when theyre a few minutes away.

I don't live in a big city anymore but when I need an Uber it takes at least 30 minutes of wait time. It's a little ridiculous.

Perhaps they should have treated their employees like, well, employees, instead of "independent contractors" then

I just dont see whats so terrible or inhumane about cutting bonuses when they dont need as much active staff. Most companies dont even pay bonuses

 

considering these uber type businesses are businesses almost anyone can join unconditionally provided u have a license and decent car, and you can work whatever hours you please and stop when you please and its all by choice at your will i find ppl rather demanding with these businesses

 

Some of these calls ppl are mamong to make drivers like regular type employees, if that were to come into law they could just as easily say a company doesnt have to give workers this much flexibility in hours or in who gets hired and start to make more demands back at the ppl working for them

 

I think as long as these are gigs that are as flexible as they are and ppl join by choice at will it sounds a little entitled to me to get apalled if they take away bonuses they never had to offer to begin with in the first place
