PSA: Joanne is not a Country album

Y’all we’ve had this album for 5 years and some of y’all are still calling it “country” and saying it’s for “cowboys” :bear:

Diamond Heart: Pop-rock

A-Yo: This one always get called called country-pop but besides the lyrics there’s nothing that screams country in the production. If anything it’s more funk / rock / pop

Joanne: Soft-rock / folk

John Wayne: Same thing as A-Yo, without the country lyrics this is an electronic-rock song and would fit on BTW

Dancin’ in Circles: Pop

Perfect Illusion: Disco-rock

Million Reasons: Country-pop

Sinner’s Prayer: Country-pop

Come To Mama: Pop (60s)

Hey Girl: Pop (70s)

Angel Down: Ballad (pop)

Grigio Girls: Not gonna lie the instrumental is pretty basic and you sort of have to rely on the lyrics and the melody to classify the genre, so I’d probably count this as country-pop

Just Another Day: Pop (60s)

that means 3 out of 13 songs are really country heavy, and when it comes to influences not even half the album is country inspired. It would make just as much sense as calling it rock as it does calling it country. :vegas:

The aesthetic is country-influenced so it's not surprise fans associate it with this genre. Plus, besides rock and pop influences, there are light country influences on many songs (from Million Reasons to Sinner's Prayer and Grigio Girls).

YES

and it's also not eXpEriMeNtAL. It's literally just a pop album with some country and rock influences

Soft, soothing, and succulent

Its a pop album that has guitars at the front of the studio mix (on some songs). I think it being a 'country album' is a meme based on the visuals

Of course it's not country. It's pop influenced by other genres, like she always does.

Do you hear that? It's poison.

“PSA”... :billie:

It’s never been a real country album. People only say that because it’s the closest album with that association/vibe especially because Million Reasons is the face of the whole record and era (at least success-wise).

Definitely it’s more along the lines of pop-rock and folk.

Anyone who has ever listened to actual country music knows Joanne is anything but country :flop: Does it have country music influences? Absolutely; she did work with one of Nashville's finest songwriters after all. But a few acoustic guitars here and there doesn't make it country lol. Most fans don't like it because it's a sharp departure from her previous sound, which I can appreciate. I just don't approve of people who call it trash :wtf: Such a thing doesn't exist in her discography :whitney:

You remind me that it's such a wonderful thing to love.

Mannn I haven't listened to Joanne in ages, gonna give it a play now. The first half (up to and including Sinner's Prayer) is so damn GOOD. The 60s/70s pop section really isn't my vibe and as beautiful as the message is, I think Angel Down is one of my least favourite Gaga tracks - I've maybe played it 5 times total...I find it a really grating listen. The rest of it is amazing though.

I would love Gaga to do a full country-folk album some time; I really like the pop twist to Joanne, but I'd love her to immerse fully in a different genre without worrying about fan backlash. Same for an Americana/Rock album ala Springsteen - she would absolutely NAIL it. Diamond Heart gives me Springsteen vibes actually, and the anthemic/rock elements on BTW are amazing.
