(TW) Mental Health and Chromatica

I recall the chills I felt a year ago listening to Chromatica for the first time because not only  did the album sound great, but the depth of the lyrics struck a cord in me. I remember telling my boyfriend how it was a beautiful record, but also terribly sad, as you can feel the pain of her struggle with mental health as plain as day. Though I resonated with her words as someone who also struggles with mental health (as many of us do), admittedly I was in a pretty good headspace in life as the album debuted. Thus, I didn’t feel the full effect of the lyrics at the time.

Lately my mental health has been very turbulent. Lots of ups and downs. Yesterday in particular I was in a lot of pain, as I mentally revisited hurt from abuse in my youth. When Replay came on and she sang about the ‘scars on her mind’, I nearly found myself bawling in the middle of working out at the gym. I took a break from the album over the past few months and this return to it (coupled with being in a different mental state) has been both cathartic and eye opening. I feel bad for her, empathize with her, and feel guilty for our demands as fans when her hurt is widely apparent. Even if she is doing better from the time of when she wrote the album, I’m sure some of the lyrics are very triggering for her as well.

How about you guys? Have you revisited the album while the scars on your mind are exposed and feel especially emotional?

Been a cuff touple, a puff bupple, a tough couple of years.

This album was a theraphy for her I'm sure. And somehow for us too, because we can relate to the lyrics and feel less lonely. But not in a sad way, I mean dancing helps me a lot when I'm down, so a dance record instead of ballands feels very liberating.

Constantly. This album feels so cathartic and raw, it just captures this feeling of being free from pain. It makes me so sad when all I see is people giving it **** because it couldn’t get the promo it deserved or get more shiny things to look at, it’s like the point could not have been missed any harder, like y’all thought she was joking when she said “the music, not the bling.” It’s a masterpiece and her best album yet and truly feels like something made to celebrate overcoming the struggles of mental illness.

Trust that lines like "My biggest enemy is me, pop a 911..." and "I'd rather be dry but at least I'm alive", among others, will be in a lot of people's consciousness for a long time. Such clever writing, and so affirming of a lot of people's mental state sometimes. I personally resonated with it when it dropped mid-pandemic, and up to this day. Very powerful.

People can be disappointed all they like regarding the minimal promo after the album dropped, but it’s something really special for us to be talking about the album still nearly a year later. That’s quality over quantity.

Fun Tonight is such an important song for me. I understand that it's a song to herself, but every time she sings "I can see it in your face, you don't think I pull my weight, maybe it's time for us to say goodbye." I can't help but think of the time my fiancé and I were going through a rough patch and nearly broke-up.

1000 Doves is another great song for me because it really puts into words how hard it is to ask for help after you've suffered for so long.

Rain on Me is the perfect song for celebrating just simply surviving in a time of crisis.

The entire album is an immaculate work of art and if she had not released Born This Way, Chromatica would be my number one.

You remind me that it's such a wonderful thing to love.

"My biggest enemy is me" hit me so ****ing hard... she speaks out what many people are afraid of saying out loud, but what everyone is thinking...

For most fans, I feel the music first and foremost should be what they care about. Some people here really make me scratch my head.
