Wait, after reading the full thread, is he saying this would replace the gas tax? It sounded to me like an additional tax but I'm wondering if I misunderstood.

You haven't offered any evidence to the contrary. Have you ever actually lived in Central Florida? What is your basis for such claims? I'm serious, please show me because in the five years I lived in the area, nothing near the theme parks was cheap compared to areas outside that bubble. Average rent around the theme park areas was easily in the low $1200's for a one-bedroom and close to $2,000 for a two-bedroom.

I haven’t found the full clip but I think most are assuming it would.

That does not adequately answer the question I posed. Sure, you can get a Zillow estimate, but it doesn't take into consideration the entire picture. The fact is that you simply cannot afford to live close to the theme park area making theme park wage without shacking up with a bunch of roommates; which some do. The best thing for you to do is just sit this one out as it's clear you have zero concept of anything in this area. What's the word? Oh yeah, PRIVLEDGED. Maybe if Bernie had been elected years ago we wouldn't be having this conversation. Alas, ya'll trashed him. :huntyga:

You remind me that it's such a wonderful thing to love.

If something like this were implemented it would have to be highly catered to different areas in different ways.

We shouldn’t punish the working class.

Large corporations who use roads the most should be more heavily taxed imo.

It sounds like it would, yeah, but I haven't had the chance to dig deeper yet aside from what some others have posted here.

I could get behind it in that case 'cause then the price of gas would fall by about a dollar everywhere and all the tax revenue collected from the "driving tax" would go towards rebuilding crumbling roads and bridges and such. And driving on repaired roads will make car upkeep cost less. Even a marginal saving is still a saving for the average person.

It's the classic "you pay a little more in taxes but a lot less to live" that the Democrats and leftists like to use and I can dig it :lolly: the only question would be does the cost of the tax match or outweigh the current costs on gas?

I wish this would have been announced as a fleshed out plan rather than a seconds long sound bite.

I’m a teacher in a big city. My school is a long drive away, and my salary is pretty pathetic (that’s a whole other discussion, lol). Just bought a place, so along with all the new taxes and payments, I don’t need any more. Roads are a necessity for most people, not a luxury unfortunately.

Granted this would replace the gas tax, removing almost $1 or more from every gallon of gas you purchase, it wouldn’t impact you more than it already does. The change would be for corporations who would now how to actually pay their fair footprint (and get us roads fixed much more regularly. That less wear and tear on your vehicle would probably leave you actually better off financially than in the current system.

That’s the plan, no reason to double tax. Just a more fair tax for the average person AND corporate trucking.

It would be litigated on the state level most likely, similar to the gas tax.

I think this is an absolutely terrible idea for the gp, but I think it would be a really good idea to tax company transportation vehicles by the mile. This way the companies (who probably dodge taxes anyway) have to pay as opposed to taxing the workers can already barely makes ends meet.

This is such a bad idea. How would the government even collect an honest mileage driven number from everyone that owned, rented, ubered, or bussed a mile? Not practical in the slightest. The gas tax is the way to attack climate change. Electricity generated from fossil fuels is taxed via the electric company.

It is so annoying when rural people buy the biggest heaviest vehicle they can dream of and then complain about gas taxes. They have to drive long distance, then they should  buy a compact car, a small light fuel efficient vehicle ffs, but they don't, very often around here.

The infrastructure bill does not have to be paid for with new taxes.  Let republicans propose how it should be paid for, if they need that. Or just increase infrastructure project spend  a small amount each year because it takes so long to plan big projects, it will take years to get stuff built.

Large corporations use the roads the most? How could that possibly be true?

He literally said nothing other than he was interested in the idea

The rest of the conversation is unnecessary feigned outrage by people who have been self proclaimed day one Pete haters. There’s really nothing to it other than that lol
