I do however love and support music by black women, pop or hip hop, so it was a very gray area where I didn't know where my bias was coming from. After finding myself excited for Nas X, and other queer black male artists like Shamir or MNEK, and also noticing I don't listen to white men either except for (at one point) Troye Sivan, I'm relieved to realize that my bias wasn't against black men but straight men in general - they just don't excite me. There are some exceptions for sure (I did enjoy twenty one pilots past two projects quite a bit) but at least I'm not racist I am glad that you are aware of these inherent biases. I actually don't think that it's that uncommon, I mean just look at the threads that are posted on GGD. What percentage is on female musicians? What percentage is on straight male musicians? I get that female and queer empowerment are important for society, and that they should be represented more, but do we really need to isolate the straight male genre altogether? (this is not directed at u but more of a general discussion of my observation on GGD interests). I get that interests are very complex and we can't force people to be interested in something that don't attract them in the first place. But I think at least we need to be open-minded, and look out for genuine talent without letting sexuality play a part in it. If we let one aspect of someone's identity influence our openness to them, then I think we are biased already. Of course I'm not saying that all straight male musicians are equally talented and we should take in all of them. Some are more talented than others. Justin Bieber's new album is widely regarded as better than his last one, and The Weeknd is regarded as better than perhaps Maroon 5's new work. What I'm saying is that we need to be open, and not be like "nah you're straight male I'll pass".

It's more like the artistic choices (or lack thereof) that they make and that we don't respond to are a side effect of them being straight. Besides, straight culture is something a lot of gay people have been banished from, bullied and shunned by, and a lot of us just don't feel comfortable around straight men because of how some of them have treated us. So we try not to engage with them because we haven't been accepted into their spaces for the longest time. Also, a lot of respond to the outfits and visuals of the gays and girls we stan, and the straight males just don't be serving it to us like that. chaeri pls
