Do you think Presidents never communicated to their people before the internet? He’s literally choosing to lay low. Twitter’s impact on his silence from media is so small: he’s not a constant and present threat anymore so that explains most of the silence. That's the whole point. He's not censored or silenced, buying into that is stupid. He didn't follow the rules, he got kicked off, and he's not special enough to have his own rules. There's already Parler, it's not doing well because his supporters love to fight more than j/o in an echo chamber. When he's on twitter it gives them a place to meet and move their toxic ideas to other platforms. Your idea that he should be above a ban because we're scared of where he would go, that kind of thinking gives him power. Basically the power to be above the same rules the rest of us have to follow. Why? He's an obese orange loser on the verge of indictments and civil suits and dementia. Giving him consequences and leaving him off the platform is just the first step to showing the world that he actually is a loser, and the people who thought he wasn't? Well, they're losers too. It doesn’t have to be, in order to be harmful. It probably won’t have a ton of users, but all a cult needs is a unifying message to stick together. Trump supporters definitely have that. Plus all his aides will probably get on Fox News and promote it too. I see this as more as a You and I type success rather than a Shallow, ykno? 16 minutes ago, Bonkers said: That's the whole point. What was the point of the ban when he’s not silenced, or censored then? All this meltdown over social media and he wasn’t silenced. It just wasn’t worth it. The only thing that canceled his power was democracy - which is kinda tragic - but true. Parler’s tank has nothing to do with it’s users... it’s the way Amazon doesn’t wanna host it on it’s servers. Now they’re talking about finding others/building their own. If he ever was to be banned, it should have been years ago before it was established that twitter was the main way to hear from him. That boat has sailed long ago. Y’all need to focus on banning ideas, not individuals, and you do that by educating yourself on how illegitimate republican ideology is. The only reason he seemed on top of the world and untouchable was his presidential power. The only way he’s been proven a loser, was him tanking in the 2020 elections, something that had nothing to do with the insurrection or the social media ban. Gab, thedonald and parler (parler lost most of its users but still) are all hotbeds for trump neo nazis. Not to mention that results show that the crackdown following the January attack which led to social media banning trump and dozens of other far right figures with a following showed a dramatic decrease in far right conspiracies and propaganda circulating the internet. Twitter has its rules; and Trump broke them dozens of times using his position as president to stay safe from repercussion. When Trump got banned, gab and Parler had a huge increase in new users... even Fox News tweeted about it. That’s a cute drastic decrease until you realize all that means is that the they’ve been as they’ve all been shut down into a tiny corner where they plan damage to the real world... Okay, all I’m saying is that the only legitimate way to cancel bad ideas to prove how stupid they are. Characterizing speech and kicking it out the window not only does not do that, but makes it’s believers impassioned.

ElectricAlley 1,737
We studied Trump’s Twitter ban in my Law class, and I honestly feel like I have a better understanding of it all afterward. Twitter is a private company, who gets to make their own rules. Social media is still a relatively new medium, and it is constantly changing and adapting as we see the impact it has. Trump and his team used Twitter to incite violence and spread false information which Twitter found violated its terms of use. They had the right to ban him, and it isn’t up to anyone else to disagree with.

alsemanche 97,836
I mean we can all agree rhat the Twitter/Facebook/etc. bans were incredibly performative. These platforms are full of people inciting violence and discrimination every hour of every day and they get reported and nothing happens. It's not like they're actively trying to create a safer space for people and banning anyone who disagrees with their guidelines. I have personally reported endless users and saw my reports getting ignored because they don't think they are harmful or whatever. That being said, i dont really mind or care about Trump's ban. It's not like conservatives can't function without certain social media platforms. But also let's not play the private company has the right to do whatever it wants card, it's just not it.
