Executives at Instagram are planning to build a version of the popular photo-sharing app that can be used by children under the age of 13, according to an internal company post obtained by BuzzFeed News.

“I’m excited to announce that going forward, we have identified youth work as a priority for Instagram and have added it to our H1 priority list,” Vishal Shah, Instagram’s vice president of product, wrote on an employee message board on Thursday. “We will be building a new youth pillar within the Community Product Group to focus on two things: (a) accelerating our integrity and privacy work to ensure the safest possible experience for teens and (b) building a version of Instagram that allows people under the age of 13 to safely use Instagram for the first time.”

Current Instagram policy forbids children under the age of 13 from using the service.

So unnecessary. I think it’s sad how kids are being encouraged to use social media.

Tbh, this shouldn’t be a thing. It would NEED to be heavily monitored by both parents and the creators of the platform.

Unless of course they go the Nintendo route, and don’t allow any type of direct messaging, and only pre-programmed comments built in. I feel each photo would need to be reviewed before it went up though.

This absolutely should not happen. Kids under 13 should be staying well away from social media

Right, definitely only 13 yers old and below will signed up there, cos people will play by rules. Definitely there will be no molesters pretending to be one of them at all. :bradley:

am I the only one who thinks it's a good idea lmao :air: It's not like bc the rules say "13+" that only people 13+ are on social media, they're already online :bear: Literally me, 9yo in 2006, was online all the time lmao and this is for them! All profiles private, etc.

My childhood was great. I spent it playing with other kids, outside. My teen years were social media based. A very much flop era in comparison. This idea bad

Plus they don’t realize tweens don’t like tween-centric things. Did we all forget how cool it was to as adult like as possible? This is about to tank so hard... :laughga:

i feel like this could help in some ways cause kids in the newer generation are probably going to have instagram before 13 regardless of whether it's the kids or adult one but i would assume and hope that the kids one has more advanced protection and saftey features

however, this is still encourage people to use social media at a young age which can become very toxic

also they're definitely going to try and capitalize off of this with way more ads than we get

hard to even fathom which parts you should believe
