A lot of movies use flashbacks to point a certain event that is relevant to the character but Moonlight is divided in time periods which does not allow the viewer to actually fall in love with a character because it's played by different actors during different times during the movie. It's slow paced but the development of the story is so good that you don't care or even notice it. Def a must watch.

Yes, the ending is happy for a change, but everything is really raw and real. I loved that aspect

You see the internal racism the characters have towards Gheorghe and how Johnny slowly starts to see him in a different light and eventually falls in love with him so much that he tells his family that he needs him to be a better person, to be happy. And gladly for once a movie like this has a happy ending.
