how do you even though that this would be realistic? Do americans believe that foreigners speak english with an accent when they are in their home country? :teehee:

If you don't want to hire Italians or you dont  want the actors to learn the script in Italian then at least go the next more realistic approach which is to have them speaking in their native tongue.

Part of the cast is italian including gaga

Speaking as a European, we had to experience years of American directors telling stories set in our countries with actors who just kept American accents. It's so annoying. I'm glad this is changing. Voice coaches will work with all of them to make sure its done right and Gaga will have done her homework by watching Patrizia interviews I'm sure. Plus, the woman is literally of Italian stock. There's no way she can mess this up. Everyone else has a question mark over them but Gaga's the one we're supporting to get acclaimed and win awards so as long as she's fine, who cares about the others?

Gaga is not Italian. She’s American.

This thread gave me a headache :toofunny:

I understand being nervous for her performance but why on earth do some of you think speaking in American accents would be better for this film?

Obviously the most accurate thing would be to have them speak in Italian but since that's not going to happen, speaking in English with the Italian accent is the next best thing. It's a compromise.

Stumped as to why some of you don't see that.

Girl, this forum is composed of professional filmmakers and accent coaches, they absolutely know what they’re talking about /s

Eh, it's not a total shock. I sort of believe it would be better if it was a "neutral" accent, but it is what it is. Surprised people are so ready to deem it a "failure" already...

If anything, I'm not worried about Gaga...I'm worried that Leto and Driver are going to be fairly cringe (yes, I know they are good actors but accents (particularly non-British accents) are still hard for Americans). Gaga's already demonstrated a talent for accents (which, thankfully, she doesn't really do anymore cause it would garner some backlash) and we know she's massively into all things Italian. My guess is she's been working with an accent coach for months. Pacino's parents are Italian, so he's be raised around people speaking the language. Leto and Driver on the other hand....

Why are some of you bringing up Gaga's Italian descent as if that will help her nail it? You know Italian-Americans don't have an inborn genetic authentic Italian accent, right?  Lol we sound like whatever American locale we grew up in, we aren't any more or less adept at learning an Italian accent than anyone of any other descent. Maybe if she was the child of first-gen immigrants, she would have been exposed to spoken Italian at home growing up, but that wasn't the case for her. So "but she's Italian-American!" sounds like such a funny illogical argument to me.

I also wonder WHICH Italian accent the different cast members will have. There's waaay more than one Italian accent, same as how there are many different American, UK, Spanish etc. accents.

I'm willing to wait and see before I make a judgment call on how bad or good a choice this is. But I am a bit nervous! We will see...

It's silly, but I "think" the point may be that Gaga grew up/associated/knew Italian people (not just Italian Americans). H*ll, aren't one side of her grandparents Italian born? Al Pacino's parents are from Italy, too. In that sense, it may be easier for them to do the accents (especially as they'll have dialect coaches) since they are accustomed to certain sounds, etc.

For example, I speak conversational Spanish fairly well (I can't write for sh*t, tho, in Spanish) but my accent is near perfect....people are surprised I'm not completely fluent because my accent is dead on. The reason my accent is so good is because of my mother.....I learned to "mimic" her fairly well..and because I grew up around Spanish speaking people. If I had just learned Spanish the regular way, I'm not sure my accent would be so good. One of my friends growing up had an Irish father, and can mimic an Irish accent fairly well...

Gina Gershon (an American accretes) does a pretty good Italian accent in the "House of Versace" even though the movie looks super cheap.

Here's how she sounds in real life.

Ooo wow she did an amazing job...Very close to how donatella sounds in real life...Well done

This is her speaking English. But in her daily life she spoke italian, not english with an accent, so Gaga doing so would not be "historically accurate." It would be accurate if she did the film on italian.

and it's ok cause they not doing a documentary
