Supersonic 49,376 Posted March 15, 2021 Share Posted March 15, 2021 Two states of Germany (Baden-Württemberg & Rhineland-Palatine) have elected their state parliaments on Sunday and the conservative CDU has lost big in both states. In Baden-Würrtemberg, The Greens are again the strongest party for a THIRD election in a row with 32,6% (+2,3%) of all votes, the conservative CDU is the second strongest power but has lost a lot of ground in their former bastion again (-2,9%). With the Greens' gains in performance, a coaltion between them and the centre-left SPD is possible again. The far-right AfD scored 9,6% (a massive -5,4% drop). In Rhineland-Palatine the centre-left SPD became the strongest party with 35,7% (-0,5%), the CDU came in second with 27,7% (-4,1%), The Greens became the third-strongest party with 9,3% (+4%), the current government consisting of the SPD, Greens and the neo-liberal FDP will continue unchallenged. The far-right AfD received 8,3% of the votes (-4,4%) The sharp drop for the Conservatives in Germany has been attributed to the mismangment of the Covid-Pandemic in Germany, multiple corruption scandals that are still unfolding and the CDU adopting right-wing rhethorics and policies to gain back voters from the far-right AfD. Current nationwide polls have the CDU/CSU at 29,5% (-3,5%), the Greens at 17% (a massive +8,1%), the SPD at 17% (-3,5%), AfD 11,5% (-1,1%), FDP 10,5% (-0,2%), The Left 8% (-1,2%). The Greens are doubling their numbers, but other left leaning partys are too week for a progressive government. It's either gonna be another 4 years of CDU/CSU and SPD (very likely), or CDU/CSU and The Greens. But I don't think the Greens would risk a coaltion with the conservatives. All of their progressive agenda would be blocked and they'd find themselves in the same position as the FDP at the 2013 elections. They were riding on a massive 15% high, got to be the junior partner in the government, all of their agenda got blocked by the conservatives, next election they failed to win a single seat in the parliament and haven't really recovered their image as filthy, power-hungry liars that want power at any price LOL.
