I'm surprised they were that high, tbh. It seems the awards were swept under the proverbial rug this year. I genuinely forgot they were happening until the day of; and I used to literally host Grammy watch parties. It also didn't help that the only interesting people nominated were Gaga and Dua, and only Dua performed.

You remind me that it's such a wonderful thing to love.

So it was at it's highest during gaga's peak, it had it lowest peak before her debut and dropped this year when she wasn't there?

There are many reasons:

- Covid: award shows are not a priority for the mass population, awarding the rich and famous when some are waiting for their stimulus check for food...

- Covid: the hype isn't there much because the "covid formula" of not having everyone in the same place at the same time (red carpet, performances) makes people not excited about it.

- Audience: a lot of people who are interested in the Grammys are young people, 18-34. A lot of those don't necessarily have a TV at home/apartment. They should do an online stream too, especially for international acts/fans.

- Audience: nowadays, people tune in when their fave is on, and leave right after and talk about it on Twitter. A lot of fandoms are now niches, which makes the whole show 95% irrelevant for the majority of people.

- Controversy: the Weeknd snub was their worst enemy this year. The credibility/fairness completely disappeared.

They need a complete overhaul next year, or a major "you don't want to miss this" event. Otherwise, this year will repeat itself.

Understandable all things consider, but a partial shame because it was a really fantastic ceremony. Best in years.

I’m a simple guy to please, if you like Melodrama, we chill.

all award shows be losing viewership

people are just gonna look for what they are interested in on the internet afterwards... no need to sit through the whole thing!

Yeah, like even when Gaga does attend award shows, I personally never watch them. I just catch anything Gaga related online afterwards :spin:

I don’t think the artists were bad at all.. Billie, Dua, Doja, Meg, Cardi, Beyonce, HAIM, Harry, BTS.. That’s a pretty good lineup honestly.

I think it was the Weeknd snub + pandemic that caused this..

The 2021 Grammy Awards were down sharply from last year's event, with fewer than 10M pairs of eyes tuning in, good enough to pull a 1.9 in the demo.

The final numbers are not out yet, and as the show is live and long, there could be significant increases in both metrics. Even with an upward adjustment, the telecast is poised to do around half the numbers it did last year.

Viewers: 7.9M

Demo (18-49): 1.9

Horrible ratings. First the Golden Globes and now the Grammys. Doesn’t look good for the Oscars...

I expect the Oscars to implode, given the industry trend and the fact that no one has seen any movies this year. I truly wonder what plans are in place for next year's awards season given the fact that it seems to be a dying genre...
