There are ppl who earned $100k in 2019. Then lost their job in 2020 and did not earn anywhere near that amount but still collected unemployment. Seems a little unfair to those in this situation who may be struggling. I was temporarily working a call center for UI in CA and it was a very common story that people lost their cars or had to relocate to a less expensive city/state because it’s not the amount they are used to. Plenty of those folks do not get a tax refund at the end of the year and have to pay a few thousand dollars. 
 

Im not making an argument for the “rich people” because I don’t think these $75k earners are rich. It’s also because I live in a rather high rent city. 

If you file your taxes ASAP, it will be based on 2020

I don't agree with this for several reasons:

1. It blatantly breaks an election promise.

2. We are using outdated income info that does not necessarily reflect people's current situations.

3. This absolutely doesn't mean more money goes to people who need it - those eligible are going to get $1400 either way. If it meant the people struggling most got more money I'd be on board, but it doesn't.

4. When people get this money but don't "need" it, at least some of it will get poured back into small businesses that have lost a lot of income during the pandemic.

5. People in places where there's a high cost of living are unfairly penalized bc their salary does not go as far.

All around bad decision imo.

All of us working class people should not be fighting over scraps the government throws at us. It detracts from the much bigger systemic problem of wage inequality. E.g., Bezos is on his way to being the first trillionaire while his employees make laughable wages.

I don't want this check in any case (not bragging but neither myself or boyfriend would qualify) so better that someone else who needs the money gets it. Would have been nice if they were more generous; they can afford it they're just choosing not to...

While this doesn't change anything for me or my household personally, I'm always concerned for people in high cost-of-living areas, especially those right on the edge of the brackets/cutoffs.

I get why this deal sounds like a generally proper idea at first glance, when you're trying to address an entire huge country at once full of a variety of local economies, but there are always edge cases or strange situations and my heart goes out to them.
