Mexico's president expected to ask Joe Biden to share US vaccines

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is expected to ask President Joe Biden to consider sharing part of the U.S. coronavirus vaccine supply with its poorer southern neighbor when the two leaders hold a virtual summit on Monday, U.S. and Mexican officials said.

US President is open to discussing the matter as part of a broader regional effort to cooperate in the fight against the pandemic but will maintain as his “number one priority” the need to first vaccinate as many Americans as possible, a White House official told anonymously.

Mexican President has been one of the most vocal leaders in the developing world pressing the richest countries to improve poorer nations’ access to the vaccines. He has called the current distribution system “totally unfair.”
A Mexican official said Obrador would ask for a loan of the US vaccine supplies, to be paid back when vaccines that Mexico has contracts for are delivered later in the year.

So, I’d be more than happy to wait for my vaccine so some little old lady in Mexico could be vaccinated, but my severely immunocompromised and diabetic disabled father hasn’t even been able to get his yet, so Mexico can hold up with that request until our vulnerable folks are covered, thanks.

You guys are looking so selfish tbh, we all have seen US citizens traveling to Mexico and spreading the virus there so the two nations could share the vaccines and get both risk groups vaccinated altogether

Rich countries have all ordered more doses than they will use. Canada for example has lile 400 million doses contract for 38 million people...

 

Im sure many will share the ones they dont use but they will also wanna vaccine their own first before they do that

i really think all western countries should be sharing their vaccine supply with the global south and poorer nations if it's possible. canada is being criticized lately for hoarding vaccines while other nations have barely any and are struggling worse than we are

As he should. It's so unfair people of a country have a medical tool available to them only because of chance/ luck. The average Mexican needs the vaccine as much as the average American does, regardless of how rich their countries are.

Well compared to many other rich Countries Canada actually hasnt had a chance to vaccine as many as many have given weve been plagued with delays and most of our contracts are either for vaccines that arent approved yet or doses that still wont come for a while... we still wont even finish our priority group for a while

 

Canada hoarded in terms of contracts (more per person than any other Nation) but given the very limited supply weve gotten so far were hardly hoarding as of right now

 

Other major Nations like USA, UK and much of the rest of Europe have much higher vaccination rates per capita than we do so far. 

 

Last time i saw i think Canada was all the way down to like 20th on percentage of population vaccinated...

 

That puts us in the top 20% globally but pretty far down the list when it compares to other rich Nations tbh

I believe you should take care of your own country first and protect your own Citizens before giving away surplus supplies.

But definitely, once a vaccination threshold has been hit and all higher risk categories have been vaccinated and the R rate is below 1 all western countries should help out other countries.

In regards to comments about western people spreading the virus there, those countries can always ban incoming flights for non nationals and enforce quarantine onto new arrivals to reduce this number.

Its really not that low compared to most of the world but compared to the population giants: China, India, USA, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Brazil, Japan, Germany, Russia, France and a handful of others it is

Not the first replies... the Mexican territory had no problem in receiving US nationals for their vacations, holidays, etc... they can work this out if there is a surplus of vaccines in the US. Not only as the total quantity, but also in total quantity over the US capacity to vaccinate (referring to doses that could go past due if not used here). But, it doesn't seem to be the case. I would tell AMLO to negotiate with Canada or Germany...
