The French government has criticised Lyon's mayor after he removed meat from school lunches.

Gregory Doucet, a member of the Green party, has said the move allows service to be streamlined and quickened amid coronavirus restrictions.

But the government has hit back, accusing him of risking children's health.
"Let's stop putting ideology on our children's plates," wrote Agriculture Minister Julien Denormandie.
"Let's just give them what they need to grow well. Meat is part of it," he added on Twitter.

Interior Minister said it was an "unacceptable insult" for farmers and butchers. "We can see that the moralising and elitist policy of the Greens excludes the popular classes. Many children often only get to eat meat at the school canteen."

Mr Doucet responded by saying his right-wing predecessor as mayor introduced the same measure during the pandemic last year.
Eggs and fish  remain on school menus, and Mr Doucet said menus would be balanced for all children.

Yeah these vegans are doing too much. Forcing their lifestyle onto other people. The vegetarian option should be there but it shouldnt be the only option.

It says in the article that they still have fish and eggs on the menu, and it seems to be temporary due to coronavirus restrictions. I don't see what the problem with this is. :bear:

That's just ideologic and will most likely stay.

Also the justification is just plain bs, they're just using the pandemic to push their agenda. How is serving fish more easy than serving meat ? :air: You'll just take the same time serving one or the other, it won't be that much faster

I generally agree some impose their ideologies too much

But if OP is accurate this is in part to make it easier during pandemic and also fish and eggs remain which means good protein spurces remain

So i dont think this is THAT serious tho i would personally hate a menu with no meat :enigma:

There was two menus before their decision, one being vegetarian and the other was not like in almost all French cities so your "The vegetarian option should be there but it shouldnt be the only option" already exist and eating meat wasn't forced on any child

"the Minister said it was an "unacceptable insult" for farmers and butchers. "We can see that the moralising and elitist policy of the Greens excludes the popular classes. Many children often only get to eat meat at the school canteen.""

am I the only one who feels uncomfortable with a minister calling out a political movement like this? Very unprofessional and undemocratic behaviour imo. These kind of insults are okay if the opposition makes them, or as part of the political debate, but a minister should at least try to be a minister for all (good-hearted, non-discriminatory) citizens.

Besides, getting rid of meat in school canteens is a good idea. Most meat that we eat for lunch is processed and/or red meat. That's like handing cigarettes or beer to children during lunch lol.

Yes and it's funny how the sentence doesn't make sense at all once it's "fixed". Omnivores "forcing their lifestyle" means that every option is available so nobody can complain :toofunny:

Forcing their “lifestyle” what are you even talking about? MEAT has been forced upon us & engrained into our lifestyles despite having the SCIENCE to prove how truly BAD meat is for your body. Being a vegetarian doesn’t make you “sick” or “grow less” because everything you get in meat COMES FROM PLANTS. What do you think cows eat? Every single thing you get from artery clogging, heart destroying, cancer causing, pollution driven meat you can get & more from plants. This is the best decision any person could make, ESPECIALLY in a government role. It’s time to start changing the unhealthy lifestyles of people for the better. It’s people like you holding us back. You literally sound like a straight white woman in church “dOnT fOrCe YoUr GaY lIfEsTyLe On OuR cHiLdReN!” Google is RIGHT THERE, do some reading :saladga:

Someone please add a “yikes” reaction, it really is time.

Its not an “agenda” when it’s scientifically proven that meat kills people. Just like the other user, you sound like some backwards religious zealot “gAyS pUsHiNg ThEiR aGeNdA” like bro get a grip.

Ikr, the original article is nothing to do with veganism, but GGD seems hypersensitive to it. :laughga:

but eggs and fish are also offered so i have no idea why it is such a big scandal...I get it and I am not vegan or vegetarian. I eat meat and I do believe meat is an important part of a diet BUT fish and eggs are offered and they provide the same / similar benefits to chicken, pork or beef. In fact they are healthier sources of protein compared to beef and pork...
