AOC: 'Calling For a Full Investigation of' NY Nursing Home Death Data

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) became the latest politician from the state to call for an investigation into Gov. Andrew Coumo's handling of COVID-19 in New York's nursing homes. 

Coumo and his office have come under fire in recent weeks after the Attorney General's office released a report alleging that health officials underreported the number of seniors living in nursing homes that died from COVID-19. 

Yesterday, news broke that Coumo had made a threatening phone call to a state assemblyman who criticized him (Coumo's office disputes that characterization of the phone call). 

A bipartisan group of critics has emerged in the wake of the developments, with some suggesting the underreporting was deliberate, an attempt to cover up mishandling of the situation: in the early stages of the pandemic, almost 10,000 elderly COVID-positive patients were shuttled back into nursing homes, according to a damning new story from the New York Post based on records and logs obtained by the AP. 

A top aide to the governor, Melissa De Rosa, said that a request from legislators to update the data was frozen because the office feared a Trump DOJ probe. 

Now, leading progressive voice and potential candidate for Sen. Chuck Schumer's seat in 2022 Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has joined the chorus of voices calling for a probe of the situation. 

"Thousands of vulnerable New Yorkers lost their lives in nursing homes," and recent developments, specifically De Rosa's statement, "warrant a full investigation."

For his part, Coumo has admitted to creating a "void" of information, but did not take responsibility for anything beyond that.

There are currently legal investigations into the situation, but no hint of charges yet. 

He seemed to love spending hours on TV during his early briefings when he was a hero, hope he likes the coverage he'll be getting now! (Even if SNL pretends like the whole thing doesn't exist).

Democrats always call for full investigations when there might be impropriety or negligence, this isn't any smoking gun for conviction, just normal politics.
